I have heard many people say that Social Bookmarking Sites can really help SEO.. Any I know people who buy tuns of Social Bookmarking Posts... But I am not convienced.. Google's primary goal has always been to try to keep accurate search results that are hard to be influenced or spammed by websites... Google knows that webmasters can easily post on Social Bookmarking site; therefore, search results can easily be minipulated... I have personally never seen any results from SB sites except for a little traffic that never converts to sales... What about you guys?
I have seen a site that has like 90% of its backlinks from SB and he ranks better then mine. I think in time google will take action on sites that do that.
In my experience the only links that have any value are those that are intended to bring traffic first and PageRank second. Most social bookmarking links do not become viral, and thus do little good. In a very few cases they may become viral and hundreds or thousands of links may actually increase to bring some traffic and/or PageRank but such cases are few and far between.
google also knows that people are submitting to article directories for backlinks, submitting to directories, sponsoring themes, doing blog commenting etc but they still work. what google knows webmasters are doing is not the point to consider (not till they stop working), it is what still works. and webmasters do what works for them
As far as i know they really help specially social bookmarking sites with do follow tag but recently they lost their value.
It comes down to traffic. If posting links in a social bookmarking site brings your site traffic - post away. If not, you shouldn't waste time. The best way to tell is check your web logs after say 3 months of placing links and measure that against other traffic building methods.
I also was told by other people that tested over a period of time, the effects of social bookmarking. Apparently (I haven't tried it myself) that if you bookmark your own sites, you won't get a whole lot of traffic, but if you get other people to bookmark the sites for you..you will get way more traffic. maybe you should try that.
I've tested social bookmarking on 4 of my sites and got the same results on each. I did 100 social bookmarks for each site at different times and every time about 3 weeks after I do the submissions my website jumps up in rankings for the keywords i used for about 1 week, and then the ranking disappears again. I think it has something to do with Google's "freshness" factor for new backlinks, but I dont think social bookmarks have any lasting SEO value
All of you have great input; thanks for all of the ideas.. Once when I posted to a lot of SB sites I did notice a short boost but that was it.
SB sites are only good if you do it correctly. They must be "DoFollow" sites, allow links and you need to use a proper SEOed link to the targeted web page. By using a broad selection of SB sites, you affect the "link branding" of your site for that keyword phrase and as a result, your page moves up in the SERPs. But if you think it will improve PR, it doesn't.
I think Google has definitely discounted the value of social bookmarking site links. It truly comes down to traffic value. If you have links in places where traffic may be found this is obviously of far greater value overall - it's about having eyeballs looking at the site. PageRank can help some in getting a higher keyword ranking in Google in some cases but overall it's really about traffic.
If you're going to be focusing on getting links from the social bookmarking and networking sites, you'll be engaging in social media optimization, which is not search engine optimization (or marketing for that matter). They're two different beasts entirely.
Great point Dan! I have found that social bookmarking helps get pages indexed (found) by search engines if they don't get picked up otherwise. Social media optimization is needed to target your audience, rather than spamming to get backlinks.
I m doing social bookmarking for my clients from 2 years n currently working wd more then 5 seo sites but u are the first person who telling this..who told you that SB is not help in seo.. if you trying to do white hat seo then this is most powerfull method to increase ur PR n if u have some tricks then its also help to boost ur traffic also.. i think u must learn little more about social bookmarking..
SB does help SEO somewhat, but I think the point is that it is only one of the many tools to use. Increasing a pages PR is not a measure of successful SEO. PR may be useful if you are selling links to those who still think PR matters.
it is all depends on the SB's outbound link characteristic, if they are set to do follow, then it helps I think
I'm glad to have seen this thread, I have repeatedly stated that Social Bookmarking is not an effective SEO strategy for the long term and the backlinks have very little to No affect They can be a good form of traffic, however, it's untargeted and seldom converts Personally, I feel that SB is best used for getting pages indexed quickly (Big Deal!!)
Easy. In fact, it's not only so easy that a caveman can do it (sorry Geico), but it's also easy to put into a list. SEO is a technical process that involves optimizing the code and content of a Web page for the search engines to rank well for targeted search terms. Link development is not search engine optimization (SEO). It's marketing. If you're focusing all of your link development on the social networking sites, then you're engaging in social media marketing, which is not SEO (see above). Allow me to say this again. SEO (which is a technical process) is not marketing (a process designed to get people to not only express interest in but also buy your product or request your services). Now, it makes sense to state that SEO and SMO are not the same thing since the person who handles the technical issues in both specialties happens to be focusing on two completely different markets. One is the search engines (SEO) - the other is social media (SMO). Yes, you can use social media marketing (SMM) to impact your rankings in the search engines, but any such impact will be done via marketing (which is not SEO or SMO), and it will be second-hand rather than direct (think of it as the search engines piggy-backing off of the benefits that SMM can provide). That being said, if you're using social media optimization and marketing to rank well in the search engines, chances are very good that the keywords or markets you're targeting have either not been optimized for the search engines or were never that competitive to begin with.
