where would you spend a marketing budget?

I'm about to start investing money back into some of my websites. These websites have been up since 2004. Some of them have alright rankings on msn and yahoo. They are nowhere on Google, but that is expected as they are thin affiliate websites. If you were in my situation, where would you invest the money? I'm thinking about $1000 per site.

I plan on purchasing some articles from freelance writers to submit to article directories. This is probably the best value for the money.

Where else should I spend money? blogpost reviews? text link ads? link building services?

    anything else?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I'll give +rep to anyone who gives the best suggestions.

I would do the same as well by investing in quality articles and submit to directories. Should be the best investment option :)

You can go for Google adwords for getting instant traffic.
If you have time you can do socialbookmarking of your site through socialposter.com or socialmarker.com, both tools are semi automated free tools.
off course submitting articles in ezine would boost your traffic too, but i would suggest you to do good keyword research before getting the articles written from freelance writers. you can target only those keywords which gets 250-1000 uniques monthly and have less competition. for checking the monthly hits in google, you can use good adwords keyword tool (in case you don't know about it)

    I hope it helps..

Thanks for the advice. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

I'm not planning on doing any ppc. I'd rather spend money on long term traffic/rankings.

build a simple wordpress blog on subdomains of each of the domains you own.

Using your keyword research, come up with posts related to discreet keyword groups and link to the main website's content.

Recently, I have found that my best investment by far is to invest in Link Building, obtaining quality inbound links is still the most powerful SEO strategy in my opinion!

Why don't you plan to do the PPC for traffics? It would be a good exposure to your site and if it has some good qualities, people will remember your site and come back again later

Honestly , if it's not seo , I would spend it on adwords - which comes to be PPC.

In my opinion PPC is not the best use of money. Sure it brings instant quality traffic, but at a high price. Once you spend the money, the effects disappear. If your website is very high quality you will retain some of those people as repeat. In my case I do not have that luxury yet. Also in some niches the price & competition level play a factor in the success of a ppc campaign.

If you spend money that will help produce organic rankings then you get much more traffic over a longer period of time. I was just hoping for some suggestions from experienced seo's. Obviously they want to keep some strategy secret though.

I would opt for link building myself. Linkvana or syndicatekahuna.com would be good choices.

What ever you do never buy links, text ads etc, if the big G finds out you will get a penalty.

I would look at spending some money on a freelance writer to write content for your website, look at employing someone to do around 20 link submissions a day and maybe you may want to invest some money in to a seo company and get them to do some work for you, get a video on youtube about your company, will help for exposure or as a final option look at getting a pr company to generate some news about your sites/ company etc!
