How to find how much there is competition for specific keyword?

For example i go to tools.seobook.com, make my keyword list and then go to google.com

Write "keyword" and will show me the number of pages that are indexed, is this correct way??

I've also used Wordze with got KEI but don't know how much these results are reliable??

when every you search for any keywords your will find this msg on top right portion of the page "Results 41 - 50 of about 6,660,000 for website promotion company"

Here 6,660,000 is the competition for the keyword website promotion company

i hope it is clear now

"keword keyword" is the way to search because that's exact match and shows the competition for your search frase, while - keyword keyword - is brought match and shows all pages that contain those words in any combination, which is not your targeted aim.

If you use just one word search terms the results will be, of course, the same (or should at least).

judging competition needs to go a lot farther than how much search results are returned. you need to look at the PR, # of backlinks, and EDU/GOV backlinks to your competitors sites, thats how you really determine how hard it will be to rank

Try searching intitle:keyword and inanchor:keyword to get real view on competition.
Use "SEO for Firefox" extension for more info about competitors.

There are only 10 competitors that you need to be concerned about for every keyword phrase you target and that is the Top 10.

To win at SEO, you must beat them with better OnPage SEO, ~match quality/quantity of links, and get some traffic to the site via PPC.

Then if you have content that someone would be interested in natural traffic starts.

All other "Tools" that don't tell you how to match or identify the differences is worthless.

    Great stuff in this thread...

BTW, what is the best way to find out what keywords a competitor site is trying to rank for? Is it just using a Keyword Density tool like in SEO Quake to figure this out?

I don't think those all 6,660,000 websites are competing for the keywords. TBH, some of them might not even competing for it.

Whenever you ask any SEO person or any SEO expert for the competition this will be the answers.
KEI (keyword effectiveness Index) is also measure by considering this competition in mind.
