Can you explain this - slipped from No 5 to 19 in one day?

I have been on page 1 of google for a month or two ( postion 8 upto 4 )

Checking today I have slipped down to page 2 ( position 19 ) how on earth can I drop so far in one day, yesterday I was No 5.

    Thanks - JB

Google keeps updating; in such times this changes are "normal".
I am observing client's sites and have seen changes like this and more lots of times during the past months, although I never saw an update lasting that long.
Don't worry, if you haven't done anything wrong it will probably come back. If not for reasons of the final new algo, the time to think about changes will be after the update. Meanwhile you should do what I seldomly recommend - keep building links as the only measure that does not require an analysis about what's going on.

It just happens and there's nothing we can do about it. Happens to me, happens to you, happens to everyone.

If I could understand it, I'd tell you... but nobody can, except the ones who've seen Google's algorithm. :)

The search engines behave in different manners at time. Check out again after few days to see your position.

    My explanation:
few weeks ago your link was removed or changed on authority website and now google found out that this very important website is not longer linking to you and they have reduce your bonus.

(this is one and common explanation, but there are possible more reasons, like you did something wrong, you where bad boy, you didnt obey rules... etc etc)

It happens all the time. Most likely it's because google feel that there are other sites which are better than yours and more backlinks pointing to it and thus will get higher ranking.

You might need to check you backlinks, in my opinion you have lost one of the quality links pointing to your website...
Even if it's a while ago, maybe they just noticed that ;)

Google favors for fresh content in many cases. If your information has not been updated for some time, and google found other strong webpages with fresh content, then expect to keep falling.

I can out position many pages, for many keywords in as fast as a day for less competitive ones.
Sometimes I can take the number one or two spot for certain phrases very quickly.

here is an example of an article i wrote yesterday in the number 2 spot
    http://www.google.com/search?num=10...=Establishing+A+Mission+Statement&btnG=Search

    look for blog.areawebsolutions.com

    fresh is best

Another thing to consider is, did any of your important backlinks drop? If so, then so will your position.

I don't know what to say but looks like there is something happened with Google. Somehow, I experienced the same problem. Worst, my site was totally sandboxed after a week in front page of SERP.

jb007uk - Same here, 15 to 52 overnight! Mine is quite a new site so I guess it's just trying to settle on a position for me? It did something similar a few days ago and after relegating me to the 4th or 5th page suddenly put me on the 2nd page (where I had been till now) - crazy stuff. I intend to just trying to focus on generating good content and getting the odd backlink and see what happens.

Have you checked whether Google has been having any problems crawling your site?

I had the same issue on my website last night, I was showing 5th for condoms, 17.5 odd million in google.co.uk

Now dropped back of to rank 13. However for durex & durex condoms today, I have increased.

Google are defenetily updating constantly. Nothing to worry about. Like said above, just keep working on getting new quality links to your website & new content and let the rest work for you
