Do You Donate to Any Charities?

I'm relatively new to the world of Internet Marketing, though I've been designing websites for almost 10 years. Since I'm starting to make some money out of the game I've also decided to better myself in other ways i.e. fitness, self discipline, etc.

One of the things I've decided to do is give 10% of my income for the rest of my life to charity. I am looking into different charities and how they spend their money just now and so far am siding with WWF and other animal based charities, since I feel that on the whole animals and wildlife have a much harder time than humans.

I wondered if anyone currently donates to charities, if so which and how much?

Well.. currently I don't.. all money I get is for me.. because:
    1) I never saw real bad things in the world with my own eyes (only on television)
    2) after many charities using a lot money for theirself (suddenly 50% is gone to.. nobody)
    I don't do it...

First I gotta see something with my own eyes...

BUT: I'm willing to spend some money on charity things like children with cancer... as:
    1) it's hard for the parents
    2) it's harder for the child...

But for now.. the money I would give would be nothing in their eyes.. I gotta earn good money and than I will start spending money on some organizations ;)

The Red Cross is always a good one. Church? That's a good place to donate. I tend to donate locally, then I see where its going. Used to do MDA and some Cancer charities and found that money ends up going to administrative costs rather than helping find a cure.

Food pantries really need your help right now. If you are going to donate 10% I'd suggest using that 10% and buying food, then dropping it off at the Food Pantry near you, weekly. You'll be glad you did!

I used to go around downtown san diego passing food directly to the homeless people there, also used to go to east side san diego but u always have to take a friend with you when doing that as its very dangerous in some of those areas to be on foot alone. I prefer to see the food placed directly into their hands as i know they are really getting it, but donating your time to the food pantries as Mia said is a great idea also.

My wife and I donate 10% of our income too. (usually to the same 3 or 4 charities)

We also work w/ a few charities run by people we know.

And I'll flip the bums on the street a few bucks when I walk by too.

I've found that time is much more valuable than money alone. What I mean is, donating time through a charitable organization. I am a Director of the Lake Geneva Junior Chamber (JAYCEES) and the collective money that we raise goes back into our community for a huge number of causes too numerous to list here. Between that and the other business owners in town we are able to contribute collectively to everything from Big Brothers Big Sisters on down to the local animal shelters.

We put about $50k back into our community this year alone. You'd be surprised the amount of networking and benefits you find when working with a larger group. My time with the Jaycees is limited to the 40 year mark, which means I will probably join the Lyons next.

As a business and personally, I've not limited myself to charities alone. I've found time to help the local schools via the PTA by donating materials, Halloween bags and treats as well as services and goods to their silent auction and fun fairs, both of which raise much needed money for our school system. Money not otherwise budgeted for different things is earned through the PTA.

I guess what I am trying to say here is, don't donate blindly. Pick something you know will help someone or your community directly.

I mentioned to people in the homeless thread here to buy an extra gift or toy this year when Christmas shopping to donate to something like Toys for Tots, or at your local YMCA. The Y is a great place to drop off goods like food, toys and other items. Hell just drop by the Y and ask. They usually have a donations request list there for the needy.

Put your money where you think it will make the most difference. And again, if you have time to give of yourself it is worth more than any amount one could give because the rewards benefit both you and those you help.

I don't currently donate to any charities but the WWF is a good choice. Personally I would donate to the ASPCA in a heart beat.

I donate to some of the charities for Scottish causes. I don't like donating to foreign countries - it always seems that they keep wanting.

    Awesome, a fellow Scot =]

A few people mention suspicion at charities keeping the money for themselves, and indeed I've seen this happen. I know someone who was a managing directory for a charity group who made a healthy profit from it. I think as someone else mentioned you should never donate blindly. You should always ask some questions, meet with people from the charity or offer to help with their work if possible. Make sure you know where your money is going before you donate it.

I have a monthly direct debit of £2 to the British Red Cross. It's not a lot but I guess it all helps.

Well I'm supporting my own sports club, but I don't like to donate as many organizations rip off like 50+% of your donation. I'd rather start my own foundation later.

I don't usually donate my income since I don't earn that much but I do regularly donate blood and old clothes, shoes and stuff. I'd like to donate some money if I had more though.
