To any of you CIA guys reading this - or my brother *you know who you are* send me close enough on a ship to snipe them suckers off.

Common sense? They would think you said cents.... everything is money.

Great idea, but you would have to keep it looking like a normal freighter that carries something of high value.

They would be stupid enough and probably just let you board them with a real pirate ship.

I am betting their are government (what's left of their gov't) types in charge of the pirate operations there.

Or the other way around :) Pirates in charge of their government (what's left of their gov't).

The only solution is to protect every single ship that travels there, I know its additional costs, but must be lower than their ransoms!

Thats exactly the argument Thomas Jefferson used to equip a fleet to sail against Tripoli in the Barbary Wars... it was cheaper to pay for an attack than to pay ever growing demands for tribute.

btw...Somalia has not had a functioning government since 1991. Now it looks like local Islamic radicals want to get in on the pirate fighting game.

While many shipping companies are rerouting ships to avoid these waters there is an increasing military focus on ending the pirate problem.

I still believe RobJones should lead the effort to end the pirate menace. He identified the way to solve this problem long before governments, any commentators, the UN, political pundits or Hollywood smartypants to name a few figured out how to deal with this problem.

Once the pirate problem is solved they ought to give you that beach front property, Rob.

yup, and in 2-3 years, they all will be knocked out/sinked, it will be a temporary effort if the neighbouring countries cant do much about it.

Love to think so but I'd imagine about 99.5% of the US military beat me to it and the other .5% was outta radio contact.

i dont want to burst your bubbles but Republicans have some currption and they would love to go to war.

    Why? Conservatism

    1) Oil
    2) Big Companies affected by Shipping
    3) Weapon Companies (love the biz they are getting for making guns)
    4) When in war, Republicans always have a better chance of winning
    5) Where do the hijackers get their weapons from? I bet some of them get them from US... in a way the weapon companies get even more $$$

These my beliefs and of course i can back each one :D

Yeah... I suggested a military option entirely due to the huge profits I'd make. I'm busted, sorry I forgot to admit it.
My suggestion had nothing to do with the simple fact that it's the only thing that'll actually work.

One of the few threads that isnt GOP v DNC or conservative v liberal... guess someone HAD to try. Anyway, sorry, but I asked my wife and she assures me we don't own an oil company or manufacture arms.

I do own a history book though, and it seems it's worth learning from. As Will Rogers put it, there's three types of learning styles...
    • The guys that read what others did and learn from their experience
    • The guys that watch others closely and learn from their experience
    • And the third type that just has to pee on the electric fence to see for himself
There's a lot to be said for learning from history. That works on either side of the aisle.

The hijackers are armed with cheap Russian arms. A Ak-47 sells for something like $150 in Mogadishu, Somalia.

not necessarily russian Ak's. There are mane AK's that are copycats and made without lisense, they are cheaper than the original AK (made in Russia). There are nearly one million AK-47 assault rifles are manufactured illegally each year.

The hijack is till unsolved .
The pirates are illegal, they do nothing but robbery to "make money".
I think it would be their last robbery. :D

The ship that the Indian Navy sunk wasn't a pirate vessel but I Thai fishing vessel that pirates had taken over.

There has to be millions of AKs on the world market from Eastern Europe stock piles.

Just recently Bulgaria sold three plane loads to the Kurds.

Well, my solution was not right :) (I was saying to convoy each ship with guards)

Russian military experts say that even if you set up a navy base there, it wont be enough, because the territory is not small and if Im not mistaken they said around 200 ships/day are passing by there?

They said, it has to be an operation on the ground, not on the sea. However, it seems impossible to do that in Somalia, US tried it in 1993, but failed and Clinton made desicion to leave that territory.

Meanwhile: Moscow to send more warships to Somali coast

    http://www.russiatoday.com/news/news/33611

lol, how can they help technically? :)
