Search Ranking Timeframe Question

I'm curious how long it would normally take to see a page in google show up for a certain search term.

The site in question has backlinks (as are showing up by link: from yahoo and alltheweb), shows up in google when typing in the site url or site title, but does not show up (at least within the first 100 pages) in google when searching for keywords. All pages from the site are indexed and cached at google.

This is not a busy search term either. I would anticipate with little to no optimization it should be within the first 10 pages. However, I can't find it anywhere yet.

We published a sitemap and began SEO about 3 weeks ago, so the site is fairly new, but I was somewhat expecting search results faster than this.

Any predictions on how long it takes google to improve keyword searches?

I'm a new member and can't post my link; however, if anybody wants more info to help me diagnose this I'm happy to PM it.

    Thanks.

On established sites with good backlinks and traffic if you create a new page with non competitive phrases it shows up the same instant when the page is crawlled and cached! In top 40 or so, could be number 1

You mention that the site is fairly new. With that, I would suspect the site could be sandboxed, in which case, it could take a good couple of months before you see traffic and start to rank for keywords.

I sure hope that's not the case. ;) The site is 6 months old, but we just submitted sitemap, and started optimizing it for search engines about 3-4 weeks ago. I don't think google was aware of it until that point, so according to google it's only a 3-4 week old site.

Do you use analytics? Do you get any traffic from Google for longtail keywords?
6 months seems like a long time to wait see results for non competitive keywords.

Did you use webmaster tools to submit the sitemap? If so, does it say anything about any site issues in the "Content analysis" section of webmaster tools?

Make sure your robots txt is not blocking any part of your site.

    Cheers

Yes, using analytics.. no traffic to speak of from google/yahoo/msn. I used webmaster tools to submit the sitemap and no errors, and since they've indexed and cached the site. No robots.txt file on this site to block anything.

I just thumbed through the first 100 pages of search results for related keywords, and it doesn't come up in goog. The only way so far I've found bringing it up is to type in the company name which is totally unique, and it comes up in spot #1.
