My website isn't the first in Google

Though I have more linkbacks than the first website, and probable I'm older than him, both of us have the same name with a few extra words in the title. But he's the first.

    What could be the reasons?

Any help will be appreciated. :)

In your back links use the title you want to rank for like your key words in the title text of your back links..
And also he may be having back links on some more related sites..

Try to get links on sites that have your keywords on their sites.. more "relevent back links"..

Those are a couple of reasons why mabye.. Good luck :)

This could be for several reasons:

    • He may have used relevant anchor text (i.e. anchor text which includes the keywords you're optimising for)
    • His links may be from more authoritative, or more relevant websites. Are your links high quality, or just a lot of link directories?
    • There has been talk of Google giving new sites a temporary boost in the search engines, so if his site is very new, that could be a cause.

The fact that you said "probably older than him" tells me that you've probably not researched this fully. Research his site and compare it to yours. That should tell you!

Also, it might just be that his site has better content, or is better optimised than yours.

    Probably,

He may have back links from more relevant sites than yours.

And it also depends where your backlinks are placed on page.

So he may have backlinks from better places on page like near to the top or from headers.

So there are so many factors that affects..

And you are considering only one factor that is number of backlinks...

There are too many reasons, maybe his backlinks quality better than you, or his sites spread at the right position (index by google timely).
In your words, i only conclude the 2 reasons.

No one has mentioned that the backlinks may be fewer than yours but they may be Google backlinks i.e links from pages already indexed in Google. I have 14,000 links and just a small percentage are the ones carrying most weight. Just like offline real estate, online real estate has better or worse neighbourhoods. Get yourself links from the up market neighbourhoods and you'll catch that other website fast.

Andrew's right. People get fixated with having loads of links when a little bit of planning and forethought should help you suss out the links that'll get you the traffic and pagerank.
