Having several H1 tags on the same page.

    If you have multiple H1 or H2 tags on the same page, will it confuse SEs or cause that pages SERP rank to drop?

    If not, then would it be good to have multiple H1 tags?

    For example, if you have a page about Golden Retrievers, and you have several headings like Caring For Goldens, Golden temperment, A healthy diet for goldens, etc.

    Would it be best to use an H1, H2, and H3 tag, or have 3 H1 tags?

    Every page should have only one H1 tag :)

    I'm not sure if this will lower your SERP but i think it will somehow dilute your keywords in a page if you have more than one <H1>

    You may want to refer to this thread for more discussion.

    I don’t know if it would be a problem to have many h1 on just one page but you could certainly use h2 and h3 with keywords. Keep it simple and with the keywords you’re targeting, in this case “Golden” “Retrievers”.

    Agreed, and by using CSS you could make them all appear visually the same.

    It is not recommended to use H1 tag too often in one page. I would suggest to use H2 and H3 with your keywords.

    I would'nt say using CSS to alter the look of H tags is 'cheating google!'

    it is just same as extremly small text or using font with same color as background...the point is "what Google see is not same as what your vistor see".

    Sure you can go ahead and try

    Its not the same as the examples you mention.

    I have tried and i like the results and so it seems does Google!

    I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

    ahkip, i think you misunderstood BFTUK's point :rolleyes:

    I think what BFTUK means is utilising the following CSS codes:

    h1{
        font-size: 130%;

    }
    h2{
        font-size: 130%;

    }
    h3{
      font-size: 130%;
    }

    Code (markup):
    Search Engines will still give different weights according to its Header level regardless of what is shown to the users.

    Of course :)

    I know what you mean, ahkip. This is different from black hat techniques like Keywords spamming using small fonts / transparent text as you have mentioned. The reason why people use small fonts and transparent text for spamming is to repeat tons of keywords in their pages to make their content highly relevant.

    If your heading tags help the structure of your site use them... otherwise - it may be more suitable to create subpages on your site with the content and filenames with your keywords in them [just for filename readability].

    Here's an example.

    <h1>Top of my website</h1>
    <p>
    Welcome to the <a href="top-of-my-site.html" title="top of my site">top of my website</a>, this website is about...
    </p>
    <h2>Website Updates</h2>
    <p>
    This week in my <a href="website-updates.html" title="website updates">website's updates</a>....
    </p>
    <h3>Resources</h3>
    <p>
    Some great <a href="resources.html" title="outside links on my site">resources</a> on the Internet...
    </p>

    I know, it's an ugly example - but notice how the topics are getting smaller - structure is the key - using the proper headings [without font size changes] and well written text is good to have.

    You can use multiple H1 tags on a page without being penalized, but it doesn't make sense to use multiple h1 tags because if you are optimizing for seo each page should be focused on one major topic. Then follow with sub headers using h2 and h3 tags.

    And as far as I know google doesn't read stylesheets. It doesn't make sense why they would. So you can style your h tags anyway you like.

    Hi ahkip,

    That article is on hiding text, not about the h1 tags or google reading stylesheets. It doesn't say anything about google reading stylesheets and I'm sure you know css just styles your content.
