If you're affiliate for credit cards, debt management, or anything in that field - don't bother. There's loads of ads on those subjects on there, and they are never going to convert - that's not what people go to Facebook for.

OK, I got $100-worth of Facebook advertising free through the Visa scheme (I think that's still available! - http://apps.facebook.com/visabusiness/sign_up - surely you got this great freebie already?!) and have tried it out a bit. Hey, free advertising, might as well experiment!

My first impressions are that it has potential, it is great to be able to market to a certain demographic. On the other hand, each demographic is quite limited, so say you choose a demographic containing 5 million people, most of them will see your ad within quite a short space of time. So you get a big spike in visits and then it tails off, and in fact they stop altogether, though this might be how the system works, haven't figured it out. Maybe they want you to up your bid...

Also, since it's not keyword bidding, there is big competition for ad positions, so you won't get a click for much under $0.60. And the question is, what to sell that way? It seems that Facebook users do not convert too well - product ads were an abject failure for me, it's just people clicking through out of idle curiosity.

I am now going to try and improve my landing page and draw them in to the site more, and also get them to opt in to a newsletter. I think that's about the most profitable way I can spend my free $100 - converting them to potential long-term customers. We will see... But for long-term product advertising, I can't see that it works very well...

Facebook is a great branding exercise. Lot's of impressions depending on your targeting. I also have greater success when I make a Facebook landing page from well themed ads. Some of my health related sites convert well.

    * Tip use Google Analytics manual tags to track conversions.
