    A Back Link is simply a link from another site to your website.

    the more back links you have the higher your website will rank in Google (at the most simple level).

    The forum signature or u advertise your site in another site with yours URL click etc

    If you want to see a sample of your backlinks, try this free tool at http://www.seo-forensics.com

    It gives the link location, PageRank of the page with the link on it, IP address and number of links on the same page for for the main links from Yahoo and Google. It doesn't show all Google links, but I don't think Google does either :)
