    Hey guys,

I have had my web directory now for quite a while but looking for some ideas to promote it a little and get some more consistent traffic.

I am sure as it is a general directory that may make it harder but any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Start off by offering a free little promotion. tell people they can add their link with no backlink needed for the first 100-200 users. Then join link market dot net and start to get some link backs.

Also do some manual link exchange by searching the engines. Post a little article or two to an article submission service. Theres just a few easy ways.

    Goodluck.

Advertise on some of the larger directory list sites (directorycritic.com, etc.). Advertise on other directories. Advertise in some approved emails from directories. There's a lot of things you can do. :)

    1. Promote your directory on directory lists.
    2. Keep it in your signature / avatar
    3. You might also put a blog there and post useful info to get people to visit your directory.

submit your directory to Directory Rate and Directory Critic first.

Beyond Directory Rate and Directory Critic — what other paid directories would you suggest?

when i launched my travel directory, i offered some initiatives to those who added their listings.
For example, for a limited period, all submissions are free and the one with the best description will get a sitewide link for X months.
this way you also generate content
always check in the link exchange sub-forum to get more backlinks.

    good luck

Just do more promoting, get more links and increase the PR. I seen weekly purchases from my higher PR directories.

Spending some money on banner advertising and directory submissions from high-traffic directories always helps.

Just fill out the meta tags properly and submit to other directories. Build some links and then wait....

Using a signature is a good idea, but begin using an email sig only, until you check out the readership of where your links will be. Don't blindly post anywhere, or you could be attracting the wrong crowd - know what I'm saying.......

Directory lists are what everyone else does, why place your link where it competes wth so many similar sites. Instead, put your website where it isn't competing so much and where it will stand out.

Blogs are great (if used in the right way), but like article sites, sadly their used to spam links these days. Why make extra work by setting up a blog, maintaining it, promoting it, just so you can drive a bit more traffic to a directory you have to promote just as hard in the first place. The number one rule of the web is - NEVER create more work for yourself - you will regret it in the end.

I offer webmaster advertising opportunities on my lists, but the free directory list is full and has no advertiser openings. My social bookmarking list has some positions available though.

i honestly don't believe that banner advertising will help in this case as it's a new directory.
he should concentrate on building links for himself and improving the directory's content

If you need fast promotion I guess there is always PPC, although for a directory I doubt you will really get a good return on your investment...

PPC is good, but like all advertising - when against 1 million plus websites, it gets expensive. 3000 visitors a month will cost £1000/$1750 for your main keywords. Even at $50 a month, it's not enough traffic hitting a site to make any amazing difference.

You want traffic - not backlinks. Backlinks are either poor or just for PR purposes, which isn't good when you need buying visitors to buy from you.

If there are really 75'000 directories, then that's 75'000 competitors, all link swapping, all relying on serps position and pagerank, which means they are doing exactly what everyone else does promotion-wise. How the hell can you win buying expensive PPC ads - your money will run out so fast, as this is what advertising will do.

Webmasters don't have 1000's to do this, they need some cash so they can build something for their site, that is inviting - so it sucks people in and ends up on other websites for free.

Other than that, there's basically few options.

The problem with directories is you really need pr on pages (to sell the links) but also rankings - both are dificult to get on directoies in the modern market
