Did you know, at one point, black people couldn't get married?

Yup, as long as they were considered slaves, most couldn't officially marry. Even white indentured slaves weren't allowed to marry.

In fact, it was illegal (per state) for a long time for any interracial marriages.

    http://www.answers.com/topic/miscegenation

Check out this article from 1999 on CNN-

Alabama considers lifting interracial marriage ban

Just imagine, for a second, a world where this was still the case -- where you might not be allowed to marry someone you fell in love with because you had a different skin color or ethnicity.

    Crazy, right?

It's a good thing we had intelligent people in place to reverse the idiocy. They didn't buy into the slippery slope arguments and didn't allow the majority belief to hold them back. They fought for what was right, even if it wasn't what they were raised to believe was true.

Oh no. Discussions? We wouldn't want that.

Of course, you think it's obvious now but at the time, it obviously wasn't.

Pointless? Nay, the point is that there was a retarded and oppressive law enforced state-by-state and eventually, they all got rid of it once they pulled their heads out of their asses.

There is much shit like this in history. Like ads for buying/selling slaves and finding runaway slaves like these. Civilization of man is a Looooong process that hasn't even properly begun yet.

Even thou Alabama still had interracial ban till 98, the law was not enforced for a long while.

There are thousands of laws that are in place that aren't enforced in the US.

I fail to see your point you are trying to convey.

    Peace,

Perhaps there are laws that aren't enforced but I doubt there are laws that aren't enforced when it comes to raising children, receiving tax benefits, medical benefits, and all the rest of the things normal people get when they are allowed to marry.

    Hopefully that clears it up.

Scott is trying to draw a parallel between being black and being gay.

I completely grasp the comparison cause I remember the anxiety one of when my friends went thru our junior year when he came outta the closet and told his folks he was black.

Honestly, I didn't know about the anti-interracial marriage laws.

But the world is becoming a better place I believe, it just takes time. We're getting there!

    Hah, nice.

Yes -- the parallel is quite clear only because it seems ridiculous now to think that people were such douche bags back in the day as to think they were better than other people because of genitalia or skin color. Now they've got a whole new reason: sexual preference.

    Sure, why not?

That's true, but if two gay parents have a child and one parent dies, the other parent has to give up the kid.

Not so great for the gays.

That's a hopeful outlook and I hope people start to share it. As long as we can urge people toward some kind of logic, they can remove their heads from their asses. Only time will tell. :)

There is really no comparison there between blacks and gays. If you want to use history to compare, blacks were also not allowed to:
    Walk Free
    Vote
    Look at a white person
    Educate Themselves
Use the same entrance as whites
Use the same water fountain as whites
Use the same bathrooms as whites
talk back to a white person
    Look at a white woman
    Work with whites
Go to the same movie theaters
    ...and so on.

I don't think gays ever had such laws directed specifically towards them.

Legally, gays can still make a will, own property, and investments jointly, and list your partner as next of kin....and always have been able to.

I think hes just trying to make himself and his buddies believe that there is a comparison between being black and gay:D. So far no ones buying it. I dont recall gays ever having going through being slaves, and we all know african americans dont see the comparison either as a majority of them voted yes on prop 8.;)

First off - I'm in no way trying to say that they're the same. I am very aware that black people went through a whole shitload more than gays or .. any other variety of people I can think of.

But that doesn't change the fact that there are -some- parallels that are hard to ignore, especially in this day and age. It also doesn't change some people wanting to take away gay people's rights to do those things that you listed and more.

So for someone to say "There is really no comparison," they're clearly making a cynical statement that has no basis in reality.

pingpong: curious to see when you'll provide actual responses instead of attempts at trolling. don't worry, if you can bring up something of actual substance that makes sense, the sky won't fall.

OMG this argument gets on my nerves...

The gay marriage debate is NOT about being gay - it's about what MARRIAGE actually is.

By definition, two people of the same sex cannot have a MARRIAGE, because marriage is an institution, originated in monotheistic religion, that is the union of a man and a woman. Think plug to outlet. That union itself is a marriage, which is why the physical act of sex consummates it. Physical representation of spiritual union between man and woman.

So, gays cannot be married because they cannot meet the criteria.

PLEASE don't liken that to the struggles of Black Americans throughout our history. I am HIGHLY offended that you would even reduce our plight to that of people with ALTERNATIVE lifestyles who wish to force their beliefs on society by forcing society to change religious-based institutions to accommodate non and anti-religious preferences.

    JESUS...

You keep telling yourself that. Let me guess.... that's what your pastor or someone in church told you isn't it?

That's so funny I don't even know where to begin.

I don't mind the comparison because I believe there is a huge distinction. There is no proof that being gay is anything other than a choice one makes. We clearly know that being black is something totally different. This discussion about gay rights keeps coming up on these forums as of lately, but I'm entitled to my opinion and I know that most of the country agrees with me on this issue.

You're absolutely right, but my original point wasn't limited to the 'gay marriage debate.' My point was that gay people are being oppressed by ignorance.

    You're dreaming, kid.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage#History

The way in which a marriage is conducted has changed over time, as has the institution itself. Although the institution of marriage pre-dates reliable recorded history, many cultures have legends or religious beliefs concerning the origins of marriage.

    and then..

The first recorded use of the word "marriage" for the union of same-sex couples also occurs during the Roman Empire. The term, however, was rarely associated with same-sex relationships, even though the relationships themselves were common.[12] In the year 342, the Christian emperors Constantius and Constans declared same-sex marriage to be illegal.

You're saying people have to have sex for marriage to be valid?

Wow, not just gays but also a lot of Christian couples don't meet the criteria. Harsh, but hey -- if that's what the good book tells us to think, why disagree?

Alternative? As in .. different or non-traditional? Really?

You honestly think the African American struggle was parallel with the white struggle during slavery?

You're missing the point. The word 'marriage' wasn't invented by 'JESUS' (surprise, surprise), nor by the church. The idea wasn't even invented by the church. It used to be a private ceremony between families and the Christian church DECIDED to claim dominion over it and even then, only for CHRISTIANS. Believe it or not, other religions have their own forms of marriage, even non-religious groups. This means one thing and one thing only: marriage exists independently of religion and therefore, should not be controlled by religion.

There's no tangible proof either way, so why bother saying this? This akin to empirically trying to prove that Attention Deficit Disorder or the like is a choice one makes. Sure, you can't see it but that doesn't mean it's not there.

So aside from Empirical evidence, we can look to things like brain scans, psychological studies and the like. In fact, let's look at a statement made by the American Psychological Association:

"Research suggests that the homosexual orientation is in place very early in the life cycle, possibly even before birth. It is found in about ten percent of the population, a figure which is surprisingly constant across cultures, irrespective of the different moral values and standards of a particular culture." Statement on Homosexuality, American Psychological Association, 1994-JUL.

Being black in and of itself is the same as being white or brown or what-have-you. It's the experience that makes the difference and there are experiences that can certainly be closely compared between oppressed blacks and oppressed homosexuals.

You're entitled to a lot of freedoms but that doesn't mean you should abuse them. And also, if the majority of the population believes something (like, i don't know, all Jews are bad), does that make it right? Unless you're an anti-semite, you'll realize how ridiculous that sounds.
