Lightning blew up my computer!

    Some idiot left their router plugged in during a HUGE electrical storm last night. Same old story ... I knew it could happen, but I didn't think it would happen to me.

    Woke up this morning to find my router zapped, and my motherboard's onboard LAN toasted. Which would have been acceptable, except it took me all fkn day to pin point what was broken.

    I even went to our local telephone exchange to see what was going on (it seems that half the town was zapped in the storm).. silver lining is that the guy fixing the exchange let me in and I was able to get a good look at the workings of my little town's phone system.

    I'm going out tomorrow morning to invest in a telephone surge/spike protector, a new router and the cheapest crappiest NIC I can get.

    Unplug your power cords AND phones during lightning storms!

    That's why I don't mind paying a little extra to get a power surge protector.

    I have a Monster Cable power strip I use, but now that I think about it there's no surge protector between the cable internet and my NIC.

    I'm off to search Amazon/etc for something I can easily screw in between my wall and my modem. Anyone ever seen anything like that ? I've seen the ones that include power outlets and cable/phone lines, but that's a little too much for me considering the stuff plugged into my power strip is guarenteed up to $10K

    Yeah. I know that a lightning storm can harm your computer, television connected through a cable network;
    For this simple reason, I insist people in my home to remove the cord during thunderstorms.

    Forewarned is forearmed...

    That is such a bummer man.. My dad's car got struck by lightning last year and it shattered his entire back window. He's lucky it didn't get him. It's not exactly the same and your computer, but it still sucks.
