Im looking for an alternative to simply embedding swf files using plain HTML and the browsers built-in player.

Can anyone suggest a nice skinned or nice looking swf player to use on a website?

I would suggest that too. It is feature-rich, and very widely used.

The nice thing about the jw player is that you can customize the skin to give it any look that you want. There are also a lot of already pre-built skins

If you want to play only audio files. You can try the yahoo media player implemented at my blog below. In my signature. For me, it is a good player but rarely used by webmasters.

I recommend Hdwebplayer, yes.... I wanted to have a flash player for my website. When I had a look at HdWebplayer, the player was fantastic!, the player really impressed me. It had all the options I looked out for. I am amazed with the support they provided me; the installation was user-friendly and it’s very easy to install.
