I work for my family company and I was tasked to increase the website ranking but I dont know anything about this subject. I talked to a website developer and he told me just to post the website url every where. I was wondering if there is other or more specific advice to help. The website is already being overhauled (by a professional) to promote keywords and everything. My job is just to promote it basically. The website is sharpesoft.com. And I dont know any of the website jargon so if possible be simplify the responses. Thanks a bunch.

The basics you should focus on are adding the link to the site (using the keywords that best describe it) in free Directories (search google for "directory submission services"). This is obviously the most basic form of SEO, however, its definitely a step in the right direction for a self-proclaimed rookie.

Frankly you will have to read the forum, there have been thousands of pages of information written on this already, no purpose in explaining it all again. The search function will work you wonders, if not, then try to decipher some tactics from my blog or ebook but those typically focus on more advanced topics.

You are in great luck mate. Google just published a "Search engine optimization starter guide". It a 22 page long guide but it is worth the read. It has plenty of useful information and enough to make a good start. What better than to hear stuff from the horse's mouth. Good luck mate. Keep coming back for more.

You will need to point links from high PR sites around the web. I recommend that you do some Social Bookmarking, for example: Digg, Propeller, etc
Also, if possible, try writing some articles on your niche and submit them to directories like Ezinearticles, GoArticles, etc....always remember to use one of your best keywords as the anchor text of your links....
    Hope this helps some..:)

I am new myself (I think i have less than 10 posts) but what I have learned so far is be careful. There are a few great guys on this forum and a bunch of sharks. My company is in the video game space and I have found using seo quake very useful.
