Directory is PR5 but you pay for a link on a PR0 page...

I see a lot of directories that have a PR5 (or whatever) home page but when you put your link into the category the page that your link is on normally is like PR0... Does the link still come to your site as a PR5?

If not I do not see why anyone would pay to be in the directories when there are thousands of forums out there that you can post in that have a PR0 and they are all free...

Sorry for the noob question but I am trying to figure out if want to buy a directory site or maybe even trying building one... First web page...

If the page your link is on is pr0 then I wouldn't have thought so. Personally I never buy links from directories, you will find it much cheaper and more efficient to build your links up yourself.

Yeah there are a few directories that have Pagerank on the actual pages, but they are few and far between. I believe BOTW has some good ranking for the category pages.

First, not everyone is chasing PR.

Sites that are submitted to premium directories tend to have one thing in common - their sites are of a higher quality and designed to do business well into the future. They are not MFA mini sites or other QBC short term cash generating dream machines.

Now why would a quality site spend money for a review fee on a premium directory? Usually because its a well indexed/cached directory, with the potential to send a small amount of traffic, and in many cases is a permanent link. If it's a quality directory, and one anticipates it will still be around ten years from now, it can be money well spent.

PR is not everything. Just look at some of the new directories that pop up with PR 3+ domains like joethegreasemonkeymechanic (dot) com. That's not a real domain or directory, but it highlights one of the problems in the directory industry. Too many in the QBC (quick buck crew) buy these domains with PR in auction and slap a directory on it hoping to get paid submissions. This is a black eye to the directory industry as a whole. And I'm sure this is part of the reason why Google removed the suggestion to submit to Yahoo Dir, DMOZ, and other quality directories. And Google is completely in the right for removing this suggestion because of what is going on in the directory industry.

Regarding links on forums... Take a look at this thread when it fills up. There will be how many external links from everyones signatures? 20, 30, even more? And still this page will likely remain PR 0 unless it is so popular others link to it internally or externally. So what's the difference between a PR 0 page with 30 outbound links on it and a PR 0 directory detail page that has maybe 5 or less? Granted your profile page may pick up some PR, but it generally takes a good number of posts for that to happen.

Don't let PR be your compass to direct you into the future. Focus on quality and giving your visitors what they want and the rest will all fall into place with a little planning and hard work...

You will be evaluated from pr 0 page.
I have many links in pr directories and social bookmarking sites.
But in calculation, the actual pr value where your link is evaluated.

If the page is PR 0 where your link is going to be at then your buying a link on a PR 0 page no matter what the homepage is, even though if the links are structured right the page should have some PR unless it is new. I think buying links from directories is pretty much dead unless it would Yahoo or DMOZ. I don't think free directories hurt at all but I think it is all about relevant content now anyways so really no matter if the link is PR5 or PR 0 if it is irrelevant to what your website is then you won't get much juice either way.

Yes.You are right!. That'll count as a backlink from PR0 page ( which is worthless ).
That's why I don't buy any links from directories.. it's just waste of money.
