I came as close as you can get, you know those fancy logo's they have that link to search results? It linked to a search term i was #3 for, lets just say my server suffered.

Dang... That sucks, how many hits did you get if you don't mind me asking? :p

I wonder how the people who ranked #1 felt ._.

I don't know that you would really see thousands of hits or anything with 5 seconds on the homepage..5 minutes would certainly drive allot of traffic but 5 seconds just isn't enough time..

Is like the owner of some pagerank site, google "pagerank" without the commas, and for some reason he's able to beat Google's own pagerank tool page, he's #1 and the link looks like from google, try it.

A digg homepage link would kill your server, what would a Google homepage link do to you? :)

Yeah, I think being on, technically, Google's home page could do some damage fast, I mean its only like the second most visited website in the world ;)

I got mid xx,xxx but the thing is i wasn't ranked there all day. I noticed the logo go up after midnight and checked the results it linked to, and though yep i can SEO a page and get it on the front page in under 24 hours and i did.

So i was only in the top 3 for about 4-5 hours, so that traffic came through in a short time (something like 10k hits an hour) to give you an idea. It didn't knock my server offline (8 Core Harpertown) but it slowed it down and came real close.

This is a great post! I would kill to have a homepage link on any of the 3 major search engines. Or even digg, myspace, or facebook for that matter... lol :D

    Are you sure of this?
What if our website is hosted with a unlimited bandwidth server?

It depend on which keyword and how hot are these keywords.

Thanks for you information, guy .
I heard of digg but I am not familiar with digg-liked site.
Are ther any way to "rank on the homepage of digg" ?

Those cheap unlimited bandwidth and unlimited space hosting plans are the worst for resources, they are typically oversold and will be the first to go down.

The problem with big hits like Digg or Google homepage is the number of "concurrent connections", it overwhelms Apache and the pipe similar to a Dos attack. If the site is MySql, you also have problems with table locks and RAM because MySql is pretty RAM intensive.
