I'm just setting up a virtual dedicated server! I have nothing on it yet but before I get started I want to make sure I have a very tight security I'm using Linux and it's running CentOS 5 Please suggest some software to protect me from hackers! Thanks Brian
mod security, kiss firewall, if u want strict the php then also turn safe mod on and install the acl it will install maximum security software itself s and also secure lot of permissions and directories
I'm not too sure where I even install this software so far all I have been able to access is the simple control panel. apache and the root server using ftp to the ip address! Someone was saying I should use SSH but I don't know anything about command line...
I suggest looking up general ssh commands and getting to know how to use it. It is a necessity when running a linux vps or dedicated server.
This is what I fear most! The general VPS set up went pretty good! Apache is running live, waiting for dns setting to prop and I should have a test website running live in 2 days. It's the Server Management part I don't get so much and SHH was also recommended from my server provider. Are there any quick resources you know about that will offer a step by step guide to ssh commands
Guys does this SHH have anything to do with setting up a domain name? Note that I used the simple control panel to do all the DNS forwarding, DNS setup, add a domain etc.. It's only for installing anti virus software and firewall software? so in general I can set up a domain name and website without accessing this SHH correct? At this point it would be a website with no back end security?
If you don't understand SSH then you should hire a reputable company to secure the VPS Bare minimum to secure the VPS would be APF or CSF firewall BFD or LFD brute force detection Mod_Security with a nice ruleset Chkrootkit or RKHunter for rootkit checks tmp directory and SSH hardening If you don't understand what these are and how to install/configure them, someone is likely to bring your VPS down
