Hi, I was wondering if a free .co.cc domain name is at a disadvantage to proper domain names (e.g .org, .com, .co.uk etc.) or do they have the ability to rank just as high as these other exstensions? All opinions are welcome and thanks for the advice in advance!
I am interested in the same question, but i think the answer is YES, because co.cc is subdomain of a country and not domain like .com .org .info
Yes so if it is treated as a subdomain, does this bring disadvantages with it? All I need to know is that it can rank as well as .com and .co.uk competitors? Please post any examples of .co.cc ranking welll sites if you know of any!
Hello, I remember reading in an official google post that the domain extension (.com, .org, .whatever) doesn't matter when it comes to ranking. It might give Google an idea what country your website's content is targeted at and it might give your website a boost when searching on that's country language search (if your website has content in that country's language). However, you can have your .co.cc domain and add it to your webmasters tools account (if you don't have one, simply create one) and select the targeting for your domain to be US (if that's where you're content is written for)
The extension will not have any bearings on the ranking of your site. However, for example with a .co.uk site you will find it easier to rank at google.co.uk.
I would say that .co.cc is a disadvantage. It may not be as big of a disadvantage right now, but as time goes on and it becomes more well known that it is a free domain name, people will view it as cheap... especially since it only costs 10 bucks to get a real domain
Ah yes that is true. To Google it will appear equal but to users it will appear inferior. People tend to lean towards sites such as .co.uk and .com instead of .info and .tk etc.
it's ok for testing website site i never used myself, but i did use cjb.net about 10 years ago, still it's good free.
As an seo pro I have to disagree with this statement. You actually contradicted yourself too! by having a .co.uk, yes you will rank normal on google.co.uk which is obvious because it's a country specific ext. But your .co.uk site will NOT rank as high on google.com So if your whatever.co.uk ranks page 1 on google.co.uk... I guarantee you that you will not have your same rank on google.com.
Thanks for the comments, I just need the information really basically i'm not bothered from the users perspective, I just soley need to know from G's point of view whether it's at a disadvantage? For example won't backlinks be treated to the main domain, or is each subdomain treated in its own right and has just the same possiblities as .com and .co.uk domains?
Same possiblities as TLD's. This is from my own experience with co.cc though, it is much harder to rank with a subdomain than a TLD, either that or it could be because of the country. I used to search for my own SITE NAME, and it would be buried 2/3 pages down, with a unique name.
That sounds pretty bad, I usually pay for normal .com and .co.uk but I have some small projects id like to dash onto a .co.cc if possible. Well if anybody has an example of a highly ranked .co.cc within there search results (comeptetive term), or there own .co.cc please post an example, it'd help convince me.
