social bookmarking can get your site indexed fairly quickly. also, if you submit to dofollow bookmarking sites, then you also get some backlinks. however, use it wisely. as long as you are not submitting to 1000 Pligg sites, you are fine
some social bookmarking site has a do follow tag that is why it is still helpful in gaining some backlink and some give temporary traffic.

If your content is crap, well then you should not expect to much of anything to come out of it. What you think is a great article, other's will not.
