Conventional wisdom along with a range of metrics would clearly suggest that being in the top spot would be key. However, this train of thought does not take a range of things into consideration such as... if you are ranked number one, but your site looks like complete ass, the guy in spot number 2 is sitting pretty. Other factors would include actual relevant info, etc. hope that helps. Nigel Nice post Tyler!
Wow great post. I haven't been on 1 yest but tend to bounce from 4 to 8 and I haven't seen a big change
when buying o never click on the first 1 or 2 results. I always assume they will be the most expensive so i think that it depends on what you are promoting. if I want info then I usually feel the first result will be more authoritative than the 3rd so in that case its best to be number one. thats just me tho
I definitely want number 1 spot. Often sponsored links end up on the left side of the seach pushing you number 4 spot down to number 7 which wouldn't be helpful!
based on a jpg thats proof?? I was looking for someone to post something from an authority site. I did not know ppl can install a heat mouseover on google I always click position 3 and below. I understand where people click on sites etc, its just google is a little different. Also I take the "sponsored" ads ( which is funny as google dont like paid links ) and ignore them so i nearly scroll down the page to positions 3 - 4 etc
Organic Ranking Visibility (shown in a percentage of participants looking at a listing in this location) Rank 1 – 100% Rank 2 – 100% Rank 3 – 100% Rank 4 – 85% Rank 5 – 60% Rank 6 – 50% Rank 7 – 50% Rank 8 – 30% Rank 9 – 30% Rank 10 – 20%[/QUOTE] thanks for sharing this I never heard of that website. After seeing this I imagine it's pointless to tell you that my best page views come at the top spot. People love articles that talk about something for a different point of view. Anyways, good luck on your ventures~
If you would have looked at the source that live-cms_com provided under the image, you would have seen that the jpg came from a study conducted at Cornell University: http://www.seoresearcher.com/distribution-of-clicks-on-googles-serps-and-eye-tracking-analysis.htm
I come from the uk so if you said oxford or cambridge perhaps i would have taken it serious Na: only pulling you leg!!!!!! I have noticed recently when using the internet with a friend that people will often click the paid for link above the natural search results first. I guess that they feel that someone who pays for the space is likely to be more genuine!! Not true of course
Rank 4 isn't bad, but logically when people search for something they usually click the top link, if they like that site they then will not be clicking on the link in 4th. It may be that the sites above you are better with the search engines slightly but don't have as good content as you do.
probably depends also on the site. most people click the link if they found the word they are searching for on the description/title.
That's interesting. A study by iProspect actually showed a different trend: "An iProspect study showed that 60.5 percent of Google, Yahoo!, MSN and AOL users selected a natural (unpaid) search result over paid search result as the most relevant on a sample query. 60.8 percent of Yahoo! and 72.3 percent of Google search engine users chose a natural search result as the most relevant" http://www.mwilliamsmarketing.com/news.cfm?id=51
