That's usually the issue caused my the template coder. The directory owner will be unaware if he hasn't tested it himself.

many people collect links here and then sold their directories to make fast money.

How about when it says "human edited", but a quick run through the latest listings shows there are half a dozen that are full of keyword spam in either the title or description... - Now that's aggravating.

Definitely. I was putting that under the junk listings with my first post, but certainly worth expanding on.

it is but until google really starts treating these directories a lot differently from real human edited directories don't expect them to change

Google doesn't have the time/manpower or whatever to babysit web directories and slap those that are around doing things wrong. They just pick on the big boys to deter others, yet these stupid kids still do it and don't learn their lesson.

When you see quality directories like ewebpages penalised it makes you wonder how some of the crap around here survives though. I suppose Google has to give any site a chance, so even they have to give 3-6 months for a QBC directory to proove it may is going to be a real directory, clean itself up, add links etc.

    How about:

    - 20 categories in total in the whole directory!!!

You can be on page 112 of category "Travel" or page 145 of "Computers"

    - Directories that mail you on a weekly basis with affiliate laced emails

    - Directories that are "free" but delete your links after 1 mth if you have given a backlink

    - "Free" directories that really want a reciprocal

    - Directories that show 12000 links pending approval

    Category links that dont work.

When you do find a problem with a directory and dont mind taking a moment to report it to the owner, so you look, only to find that they have no contact form, or they have one that doesn't work.

When you select your category, your half way through the submission form, and notice that Top is showing as the selected category.

When you try and navigate to find a category and it just keeps taking you back to the homepage.

When some of the most common, often used categories are missing, i mean even top categories.

When you have submitted a 300+ character description, they accept your link but only take 120 character description, they dont edit it so you have a cut off description, no full stop, half way through, incomplete that makes the submitter look like they did it. :)

I see this as being done either of two ways. You either create sufficient sub categories or you have a total of 800 links in the directory. Realistically no links should be on a "page 3" of category x.

With my directories (only two) I operate that when a Category gets to a second page its time to split the category in two or add a sub category. Each of course with a detailed introduction, correct meta tags and titles. Up to now its worked fantastically well with the majority of SE traffic arriving to level 4 and 5 categories that are on a narrow theme eg: Visitor arrives to page Business/Marketing/Promotional events and sees 7 or 8 listings instead of Business and having 120 pages of listings to wade through. Added benefit is that the ads shown are tailored right in to the keywords and pay very well Low x.xx or high .xx

It pays top put the effort in!!
