Two sites on the same server/IP and same subject linking to each other

Let's say I have two sites on the same server/IP. They are both about warcraft. One site is about warcraft leveling and the other is about warcraft gold.

I want the leveling site to rank for leveling terms and the gold site to rank for gold terms. Is it ok for me to link these sites (sitewide links) to each other to sort of "help each other out" even though they're on the same IP?

I've been reading a bunch of stuff that suggests it's better to get another host for the other site because Google doesn't really like sites on the same IP linking to each other?

Please, someone help clear this up for me. I don't really want to get another host for my other site if I don't have to..

    Thanks :)

It is only two sites linking to each other so it's not a big deal! I do that all of the time and have noticed nothing but good things through it!

No, it does not help you. On a long run, your website could get penalized

You will always hear controversial information from one marketer to the next but linking two websites together without going overboard on the same IP won't cause any problems! Like I said before I do it all of the time and I have been a successful web marketer for five years!

Agreed. It's hard for me to take action with all these controversies, but I guess it's all about taking risks. :)

screw that - why should you shell out for another host when you clearly have no need to? i think it should be fine - you're not trying to rank for competitive keywords for an ecommerce site.

This seems to be most appropriate answer to the question asked. However don't go overboard while interlinking both the sites. If in the future to decide to have more site, maybe (and it is just maybe) you could think of having a different server/IP.

Having said that, having a different host is not going to cost you a bomb, is it? Better safe than sorry. Hope I haven't confused the hell out of you. Apologies if I have. ;)

Not really that it doesn't cost a bomb. It's just that it makes things just a little more frustrating for me every month - another host, another seperate monthly payment, and basically another host to worry about (downtime, backups, etc.)

I guess that's the main reason why I'm not too keen on another host. :D

But thanks for the advice guys.

Well in that case you could keep the same host and ask for a unique IP. This is however just meant to be an alternative. As others (including me) have said, doing what you propose to do will not hurt.

I looked in to seohosting.com ... looked fine...

But then I started thinking... why go through so much and pay a higher price for hosting... change name servers... registration name... ip... all that...

And then after completing all this tedious work... then put the same Adsense account code on all my sites... letting Google know that these are all my sites anyway...

I have covered exact same point in one of my blog post, you may like to check it out.

My suggestion - it don't make much different, so go ahead but make sure its natural

I have been using a company found at 3ix.org for some of my domains and they only charge $1 a month! They offer tons of space, bandwidth, php, and have %99.9 up time with fast servers! I recommend using them if you decided to change your host but like I said before, you don't really need to change anything as long as you don't over link the two site together. :)

Personally I would host them on different hosts but NO you will not be penalized for it more then likely it will be beneficial. Matt Cutts has come out and said this is ok if the sites are related.
