Things that are aggravating about directory announcements...

Here's a few things that are always aggravating to see with directory announcements. Reply with other things that irk you too.

1) New site launches with claims of being a certain PR. Those two things just don't go together...new and PR. If it's a new site, there should not be PR. So, that's a turn-off. If you're using a dropped domain, don't even mention the PR. Most here will say that PR doesn't mean much these days, and I fully agree. Yet, like Alexa, it's still a quick reference point that speaks to the establishment of a site. However, it is meaningless for dropped domains.

2) I've been seeing a lot of directories announced repeatedly every couple days. If you have something significant new to announce, by all means do so...but if you're announcing the exact same thing you did a couple days ago, that's just aggravating.

3) There's a script going around...I don't know the name of it...but it uses the same name for all of the deep link fields, which makes it impossible for a form filler to assist with them. I hope the developer of the script will fix it soon...please! It seems to be getting more and more popular.

4) Directory domains like xyzi.com, unless the letters stand for something related to your directory. If you don't care enough about your directory project to get an appropriate or meaningful domain name, how can you expect others to care about your directory?

5) Even though I think there are better solutions to combat spam than image validation, I can understand its use. However, when your first announcing a directory here, please turn off image validation, at least until you actually get your first spam. All it does is add inconvenience to your initial submitters (when you will probably get the most legit submissions). This is many times more valid if your directory is paid.

I hate the image validation crap also. I do turn it on when spam comes in heavy then toggle it back off. I believe a paying customer should have the convenience of making the purchase quickly and painless as possible.

BTW what are better ways to combat spam ole wise Jedi Master?

 

Lol - the image validation bugs me just about as much as the "Brand New PR6 Directories"

What do you think when it comes to category selection. Do you prefer the regular drop down or the ajax methods?

 

There's a spam blocker MOD if you use PHP Link Directory... I imnagine there may be similar options for other scripts too.

 

I prefer regular for free directories. It doesn't matter as much for paid.

It doesn't happen very often but many times new directory owners post their directories without checking if the submissions work. One of the most common error I have seen is number of characters in their captcha. The theme puts a max limit on "input type textbox" and effectively disable submissions.

I don't mind either type of category listing, ajax or simple drop down. But some esyndicat directories don't work very well with Safari.

 

I don't much care about the category selection type anymore either. It used to be much more inconvenient to navigate back through the categories when I was submitting a lot more listings in the past. There was a time when I submitted about 50 listings to every directory. Now I only submit a max of 10, and usually 1 or 2, depending on the deep links and price.

 

I've scene some directories not even have a few guidelines setup and yet they promote the directory as a "quality" one.

Please make sure your "Submission Guidelines " have something in there and not a blank page.

LOL. Won't 'all links are approved' fall in the same category?

 

Don't be to hard on them, at least they can post a new directory in the correct location.

Old reputed directory owners entering the qbc, dropped domain, PR gang for some fast bucks.

Its nothing new Chris, announcement section is full of qbc and dropped domain, useless directories. Its better to stay off such directories and not send even free submissions to them.

This again points to shallow (if any) editing.

I've scene decent looking directories actually approve affiliate link's. That's a big turn off for me. Also, what about description's that are only 5 words or even the description's no longer relate to the domain. How bout parked domain's and redirect's?

Don't directory owner's review all the listings once and awhile to check for quality? Hire someone to do this. lol

 

Script is Esyndiat, I have been talking with them, but don't think they get it. And not being a programmer I don't how to do it either. Not sure how your form filler works for deep links (ie what the form fileds should be).

 

It really doesn't matter what the field names are. They just need to be different from each other and any other field on the form. Ideally, they could be like this:

deeplinkurl1

deeplinktitle2
deeplinkurl2

deeplinktitle3
deeplinkurl3

etc
