Keeping track of directories.

If you submit to a directory twice, they immediately ban you. Is there any way, tool, or add on in firefox that can alert us when we try to submit to a directory already submitted to?

You'll just have to keep a record with a program like excel. That's unless you're using software that tracks it for you. Check gadgetadvisor.com - they offer a free directory form submitter and I think it can track submissions.

When you visit a directory to submit a link, first use the directory's search function to search for that link, to make sure it's not listed already. However, the search function cannot divulge if the link in question is in pending status.

The search function doesn't work on a lot of directories.

True, I forgot that I've visited a couple of directories and searched to see if my links were already listed, but the search didn't work. And some others don't even have the function. Hopefully the owners will catch up and fix things. To me a directory is not all about submitting links, but also about searching.

    Excel keeping track
or any other program or firefox addon that helps with submission

or I believe most directories will not actually let you submit twice

they will present you with an error message that says "domain already exists"

If a directory allows duplicate url submissions, then they will not ban you. If it's not allowed, you can't submit the same url twice which will be stopped by the script itself.

That's relieving. But once I got a message that my site has been banned from the directory. Maybe it doesn't happen and they just try to scare us.

That's not true. You will just get a message like: "Your listing already exists in directory" or something like that.

Anyway, you can use digiXMAS Directory Submitter. It keeps track of all your submissions.
You should really give it a try. The free version is more than enough for semi-automatic submissions.

Agreed, most will just let you know that the URL already exists and just not allow you to submit twice.

I've submitted to so many sites over the last 2 years that I can't keep them straight anymore. I do find however, that if I try to submit to one that we are already listed on I get a message saying that the listing already exists.

To avoid duplication of effort, we keep submission directories in a Microsoft Access database. Here we keep Domain name as the primary key - which can't appear twice in the database leaving the chance of duplication to almost nil.
