I like Hubpages a lot more than I like Squidoo, but I have a hard time believing you can really make any money with that as your main site. Do you most of you use lenses and hubs as your main pages, or just as backlinks?
I use Squidoo but haven't tried Hubpages yet. I'll be trying it soon, I guess. what's their difference?
To my opinion, if you want to build backlinks you should try Squidoo. They already some features to help you drive traffic to your site. And, If you are a serious writer yet, Squidoo is not bad at all. I like hubpages because each of your article is unique as a page with ads. They have high rank in search engines, that will provide you quality traffic. But you will never be able to advertise your site on hubpages, its prohibited.
Squidoo is great for affiliate sales, Hubpages is great for articles (100% adsense earnings go to you). Hubpages is a lot more strict when it comes to affiliate links and advertising your site. Squidoo is conservative about both of those things.
Do any of you really make worthwhile money on the sites themselves, or do you use them strictly as a funnel?
Hubpages does allow promotional copy and 2 affiliate links. Generally, I notice hubpages getting ranked better.

I get equally good ranks from both, I think it all comes down to content + SEO. I prefer Squidoo because it has a better community and I just like the layout more. Hubpages' layout is easier & quicker to use, because the page doesn't refresh after every little change you make.
I think that hubpages is better than squidoo, it have more traffic and better options to monetise your unique content and SEO skills.
Hubpages does not allow you to post links in your articles... can't create backlinks there. I still go for squidoo.
We use them both for backlinks and referral traffic. You can do some great stuff with them but to many people just spam the pants off them - wasted. Some of the most successful commercial SEO's I know swear by these hub sites.
squidoo and hubpages are both so far blasted in google rankings that practically anything would be easier to rank with than them
Thats not true i just published a hub which is now ranking in the top 3 for its long-tail -took less than 24 hours to get there and its stayed for week so far
Yes you can. You do however have to add original content and a maximum of 2 backlinks - the links will be do follow if you have a minimum author score of 75 (from memory)
