Why google say not to go for purchasing links or posting links?
Google has an algorithm which counts links and rate your site according to it. If google banned sites according to such activity, one could easily get ANY site banned by submitting its link to such places. Eg. your competition could pay $9.99 to cheapwebhosting in this thread and get your site http://www.paydayloans1st.com/ in your signature banned by this way. Does it sound fair or possible to you?

Although the general information you provided is correct, it is also known that a site is not penalized according to a criteria which is not solely on site owner's hand (like being linked in other sites or link farms).

Yet I'd agree that if there is a very strong proof for this then they can ban you but this proof should be much more than registering a free account in DP as "paydayloans1st.com" and then post in this thread as paydayloans1st.com owner and ask for black hat submission. Anyone can do it, and he needn't necessarily be paydayloans1st.com owner, just the opposite it can even be its rival.

You would be right if,

Google cannot detect artificial link building, no matter who for, or for what reason, and toss it all out the window as useless. (hint hint)

They are far too behind the times to use any kind of historical / empirical data for publishers either.

Google has no clue what they are doing.... but they have the rest of us fooled into believing they do.

I bought the service 3 weeks ago. the service was fast and report was good. I am able to see lots of links in yahoo siteexplorer, Google has slowly started indexing those links, I can see the effect increasing daily.
My organic traffic has increased due to pr update.
My site got a pr2 from pr0, but i also had done article submission so dont know what exactly brought the pr.
But the links indexed by google are mostly directories and link pages, so I believe it could be due to submission.
