Does the size and speed of a page loading cause a problem for search engines?

yes, a page that takes too long to load will eventually be ignored and not indexed.

Sure it will not index properly. Off page optimization is very important in SEO

Both page load speed and file size is tracked by the SEs. A load speed >6 seconds is bad.

Yes, it does. Usually it's difficult to see this if you did not have a comparison.
What do I want to say: I had a site with this problem: long time of downloading. It was very well indexed, few thousands of pages. But, it did not have a lot of traffic - around ten thousands visits on month from Google. It was OK. Until I decided to start a Google AdWords campaign, that started really well, a good maximum CPC. For one week quality score of my keywords was great. After around ten days, Google bot spidered the pages and discovered a low speed of landing page downloading. The quality score decreased, and of course the CPC increased.
Google bot is the same. If AdWords sees the problem, trust me, Google sees it too. It will not give credit to these pages. Now I am working on fixing the problem and I hope the traffic will increase after it will be fixed.
