one of my sites (a discography site) is getting over 100 hits a day from google image searches.

Are these hits useful or just taking bandwith?

For me it is just consuming bandwidth because on my side when using image search, i usually go directly to the image and not read the website or image source.

To see your bounce rate for the URLs in question:

    1. Log in to your Analytics account.
    2. Click "View Reports".
    3. Click "Traffic Sources".
    4. Click "All Traffic Sources".
    5. Find the Google Images URLs from which you are receiving traffic.
    6. Look in the last column (6th from left), and you will see your bounce rate.

This will help you determine if you are receiving legitimate traffic from Google Image searches.

From my experience, that traffic is a bit less legitimate than the overall average on my web site. My bounce rate from Google image searches is about 5%-9% higher than my web site average bounce rate.

Bounce rate is the term given in Google Analytics, which describes when a user (or bot) enters on a page of your web site and leaves without going to another page. You need to set up a Google Analytics account to track this.

    http://www.google.com/analytics/

Google Analytics will tell you if ANY of the traffic on your site is 'good' or not! Read about it, and set up an account. It's free; it's easy to implement; and it's a necessity for many, if not all, online businesses!

    Good luck!

The traffic coming from Google Images can benefit your overall rankings. I have done experiments with this & have had sites with no significant incoming links & hap-hazard postings turn into PR4 sites - The only logical reason is because of traffic coming from image searches (1000's a day). PageRank is a complex algorythm & we would be foolish to assume it is just down to links.

Saying that, I would be surprised if Google didn't monitor bounce rate as well, so if you are getting a very high bounce rate, then it may do more harm than good.

    HTH :)
