Is #1 place in google really the best position?

Discussion in 'Keywords' started by Flashnest, Oct 26, 2008.

  1. #1
This may come across as a crazy question. But is a top position really the best place in google? I can tell you from my own experience that it is'nt. The best place for traffic is position 3 or 4. Has anybody else experienced the same thing?

For example I am getting 25% more traffic for a #4 place in google for a certain keyword than I was for the same keyword 2 months ago.

That's a very interesting question but I suspect the increase in traffic at the number 4 position is because of other factors having changed. With so many variables affecting traffic, it must be difficult in some situations to isolate exactly which one has given rise to the change in traffic. If number 4 position were consistently more productive than number 1, then that news would have reached everybody long before now.

we have been in several places ourselves and I can tell you #1 is definitely the one that we benefited the most from.

    yes...

Maybe a few other things come into play though. People like second opinions and might just end up not picking the first. Maybe somebody's eye height might come into play while sitting in their chair and the 3/4 place may be grab their attention better.

That's all just getting a bit nit picky though. Would you honestly turn down the #1 spot if you had a choice?

One of the factors could be your domain name. People look at that to see whether the link is credible or not.

Rank 1 is the best, but rank 2 or 3 is nearly as good.

I believe that the best to possition to be at in the SERP is 3-10, because people like to browse and will take a look at the other websites aswel.

Sure!, you might get more traffic but sales is what you need and not traffic.

In response to this, is there any evidence to suggest that being at the top of page 2 (i.e. ranking 11th) is better than being at the bottom of page 1 (i.e. ranking 10th)?

I'm curious, as I have heard that being 10th gains less views than being 11th, if any knows the percentages etc, could you include that in this topic?

I agree that other factors are involved, such as title and description.

Normally the top 4 or 5 listings are shown above the fold. The one that catches the viewers eyes the most is the one he/she will click on first. I don't think the url has much to do with it unless it's like 500 characters loooooooonnnnnnngggggg. That looks a little cheesy.

As for the difference between #10 on page 1 or #1 on page 2, I'm not sure, but I know that you are better off at #10 than #6 or #7. I think people start at the top and, if they don't see what they are looking for in the first 4 or 5 listings, they scroll all the way to the bottom. That's when those "other factors" kick in.

Sometimes it is like pocket Aces in Texas Holdem'

Depends on if the search phrase is really relevant to your site or not. And how specific it is.

For example. One might think that getting the #1 ranking for webhost would be a great goal for us. The thing is, most people looking for a web host are not looking for the type of hosting we offer. So the number one position would serve to burn bandwidth and not much more.

"seo host" is more targeted towards our prospective buyers, so that is the search phrase we would want to rank for.

I would say it is possible depending on how appealing your link and text looks. But it is proven that the #1 result gets the most traffic.

1 in my opinion is the optimal position, besides first I would say 3rd and 4th have done good as well. I have heard that position 2 has not worked very well for some other people besides me as well.

    Good Luck!

I do not believe that this is a good statement.

I work with SEO a lot and have read and learnt many times that .. YES!, being NO.1 will get a fair bit of traffic, but if you are looking to get good sales, then you should be looking for places with 3-10.

Number 1 is not the best place to be - install a heat mouse over or something and its ends up being 3-4 etc

Page one google on high comp keywords and you will gets lots of traffic anyhow:)

This must be an exception. In most cases #1 place will bring you much more traffic than being #4.
