Yahoo.co.uk is not a subdomain, and gmail.com redirects me to https://www.google.com/accounts/Ser...&bsv=1k96igf4806cy<mpl=default<mplcache=2 No, I am not in the UK.
as above has posted Yahoo is big in asia , very big, this puts the at number one by pure number of regular users
Yahoo is also a pioneer in search industry compared to google. Google is 2 years younger than Yahoo. This could be one of the reason too.
Just a little complement: Yahoo is number one considering only the users that have the Alexa toolbar installed on their browers. Alexa counts only the accesses issued from the Alexa toolbar, meaning that the statistic provided by them is not a correct reflection of what is really happening. Alexa toolbar users are not geographically nor culturally, nor socially world spreaded equally, therefore Alexa is a trending tool, not a statistic tool.
Yahoo is Alexa #1 because they get the most traffic in the world PERIOD. End of story. More people use yahoo than google. It's just that simple. Some people in this thread are totally misleading you by telling you that Google would be #1 if... The biggest misconception is that Google uses separate domains and Yahoo doesn't and this must be why Yahoo is #1. This is 100% wrong. This is completely wrong. Yahoo.co.uk and Yahoo.co.jp are NOT sub-domains. Yahoo.co.jp is the exact same thing as Google.co.jp. Proof: Yahoo Japan is a separate domain and has its own Alexa rank Google Japan is a separate domain and has its own Alexa rank These are sub-domains: news.yahoo.com answers.yahoo.com news.google.com mail.google.com Again. NO. Google uses a very similar sub-domain structure as Yahoo Notice any similarities? news.yahoo.com news.google.com mail.yahoo.com mail.google.com groups.yahoo.com groups.google.com Here is further proof of what I am saying: Google Traffic Levels By Sub-Domain Notice how traffic is counted for news.google.com, maps.google.com, and yes even mail.google.com? Yahoo is #1 for a reason. It's not just by accident that alexa counts their traffic differently than the rest.
I agree, and as a footnote, it's a perfect example of how more traffic does not always mean more money
Yahoo is a big time U.S portal covering almost everything under the sun. Also Yahoo mail is the 3rd most trafficked site in the world after Google at #2.
Many people are using yahoo mail and set yahoo as their home page. You might wondering why google not the first because google was break down their website with different extention, it will direct affect the alexa ranking counting
Hi, That is because not ALL people go to google.com, they have ALWAYS directly the .be, .nl page before their eyes... If google would lead all traffic to google.com, like yahoo.com they would be 50Times bigger than yahoo Greetz
how about the similarities of news in the UK? yahoo: http://uk.news.yahoo.com google: http://news.google.co.uk large sites get their sub domains or folders that have lots of traffic to be split off and show percentages of the traffic, but it still goes toward the top level domain or you wouldn't see http://news.google.com as #2 also. in alexa's faq,is says they wont give a sub domain it's own alaxa rating unless it is on a hosting service. on googles blogger, you can see some blogs have their own alexa rating.
