From a SEO standpoint is there a difference betweeen pages and post?

Technically no different, but in theory yes and the reason is posts tend to get buried deep over time when other content gets added where pages typically are one click from the homepage.

So if I treat the post as a page and link it directly from the homepage there is no difference, besides the fact that people can comment on it?

You can allow/deny comments on both pages and posts, same with pings.
