anyone heard of or use yandex?

i've been getting a few visits from them recently.
their homepage looks rubbish but a quick alexa search: http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details/yandex.com
shows it is quite well used.
any more info about them?

 

It is a big engine in Russia (I think it is the second largest next to Rambler).

It's the strongest Russian's search engine , looks rubbish yet gives very relevant results.

Sounds a bit like spandex, i can imagine a load of tough russian guys with spanky pink spandex hot pants all gathering a old win 98 comp developing this

 

Yandex.com is one of the few, who still resists to Google in local searching. Next ones are chinese baidu.com and czech seznam.cz.

I get loads of traffic from there to one of my website.

Don't know how but it does sends in lots of traffic.

Yes it is in English. I had the domain name back in 2002 then it dropped and I registered it again in 2006. Other then that nothing unusual about that site. Yet I am getting 10K+ uniques from it.

It is not rubbish :O and it is number one in Russia. Rambler is Alexa 69 and Yandex is Alexa 35.

You are very lucky to get indexed by Yandex. They have their own bot and the ranking system is at some points more difficult than Google's

So, if yo consider that most Russians speak English (or at least partly understand English... foreign language is an obligatory subject in their curriculum) and the diaspora (Russians living abroad) use Yandex, you're in a pretty good position

 

Yandex is the most useful SE in Russia. I got most part of traffic on my .ru sites from there (even more than from google.ru).
It's very powerful and BTW has its own rank system called Yandex CY, similar to Google PageRank.
