I cant seem to notice ANY directory links in google webmaster tools external links, I was just wondering is this the same with you guys? I notice some via other backlink checkers but not with google
You need to get a account with google webmaster tools then when youve added your site check the links panel and click External Links
Can you post some sample directories for reference? I know for a fact that DMOZ is a directory, and well, we know that DMOZ listing is very beneficial
Im not listed in DMOZ Yet but im sure some people in this forum are listed so maybe they could post on wether webmaster shows there DMOZ listing in external links, As for the other directories, I submited to 30+ but 0 show, this was over 2 upates ago I believe, Il have to wait until they update again and see if there added then
Google has removed the part about directory submissions in their webmaster guidelines. They no longer recommend it - even DMOZ! It doesn't mean they are not counting them though. They are just focusing less on link building and more on natural links to quality content!
I've got a lot of web directories listed in my "pages with external links" section on webmaster tools. I take a few minutes every day and pound through one of the many lists out there and over time the links add up. I'm sure Google ignores some spammy directory links, but they're also counting some of the better directory's links.
I disagree! I have also thousands that shows up there! For me, directories are still useful in SEO and link building.
Maybe the bottom line is to check where we are placing our links, ensure we are not getting along with bad neighbors but to those where we supposed to be belong. Google maybe discouraging directory submissions for us to discontinue joining those "link farm" like submission sites.
I heard that now google hate dummy site and directories... so I guess you will need some quality directory for it.
The link: operator in Google is worthless. If you want to see what links they are counting, you'll have to add and verify your site through Webmaster Tools. You'll probably see the directory links there, unless they're the typical crap spam directories people are so fond of submitting to, which may or may not even be getting fully indexed anymore.
With hundreds or even thousands of directories popping up everyday, it's no surprise Google does not give links from they any weight.
I still have sites that show backlinks from link directories. I also have a site that is DMOZ listed and the link does show in google webmaster tools. In fact this site received pagerank with only a handful of very high quality links (less than 10).
I've got loads of directory links showing up in Webmasters. They didn't all show up though until my website was a few months old.
