I disagree. DOMZ is completely irrelevant in today's context and this is purely because of the present nature and virtues of the internet. There is no feud between Google and DMOZ. Manual indexing at their whims was how DMOZ was functioning. I don't think they were adding even a single website in a day to their index in a world where there are 100s of thousands of new websites take birth and die. More over, websites added once always remain pretty at their original places within directories websites as if they are least affected by the goings on in the neighborhood of thousands of rising and falling popularity of websites. In my view, Google had to take this stance much before than now. And I am fully convinced that it's a right move by a major SE to correct the searching industry. Remember, this is not a simple change to Google's algorithm but a great step to remind us that algorithms no more dictate terms in internet but it is other way round.
I think google should clearly post a comment that it hates directory links. If it hates directory links, then it should also let us know how to build backlinks. Becoz i feel there isn't any difference between directory submissions, article directory submissions, social media submissions are all pretty similar in some or other way. We people discussing this not knowing what google reallly wants, is totally waste of our time. I see that 50% DP members still support directory submissions.... I still strongly believe my few seo methods which i still follow... 1. Quality of content has to be the most important priority first when we start a site, SEO friendly content or urls always work great. 2. Secondly i try to submit to few social media sites to get the site indexed fast. 3. An article written and submitted to alteast 100 top directories 4. Niche directory submissions, which always worked for me 5. Few forums and blog postings. And i see keyword rankings in few weeks...., there isn't any spam or black method here followed by me.. Now let google decide and show us other ways than these spam free methods.
You are correct that quality content is important, one good organic backlinks is better than 1000 directory submissions.
It was said that directory submission is dead, but it wont hurt to save those highly reputable and decent directories
What is happenning, is that Google is De-Valueing all links from DMOZ, and various other directories. Since Dmoz, seems to have failed in its quest, it has still got its "The World Largest Link Directory" title that was given to it. The editors are having issues and now you are better off taking a look somewhere else. If you are a webmaster, and want to link your site in a directory, Please PM me in about 1 month. I have a plan, i am sure you will like... Regards, ~ Mike
yep, I agree with you and I guess that's what mean by Google. It's better to get quality backlinks from various sources rather than submitting ur site in 1000 directories.
no wonder directories are just loosing its PR.. google is devaluing them.. but i dont think this will be applied to all directories.. what about those directories having good quality contents i mean.. its a directory but its not full of links with content as well.... i wonder if that would work.... wat you think folks?? zrhder
Yeah i haven't read anybody promoting directory submission for at least 3 years now. Its definitely not as popular as it was several years ago. First time i heard about it was when i bought a sitebuildit(SBI) package back in 2005.
Read for yourself... http:// groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help/web/q-a-from-the-3rd-live-chat-oct-2008 Hello... Rather then scroll threw that mess of questions i found and added here.... Marjy, Boca Raton FL: Recently, you removed this suggestion: "Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!" from your guidelines. Is there any chance that you will be discounting these kinds of links for ranking value in future? Matt Cutts: Hey Marjy . There's always the chance that we'll discount directory links in the future. What we were seeing was quite a few novice people would see the "directory" recommendation and go out and just try to submit to a ton of directories, even if some of the directories were lower-quality or even fly-by-night directories that weren't great for users. Right now we haven't changed how we're weighting directory links--we've only removed the directory suggestion from the webmaster guidelines. And there you have it... laterz malcolm
yes, in the recent scenario, social media sites are the best options to get the site indexed fast. I also believe that forums are still useful to get backlinks as well as traffic and it's my personal experience.
