PaddyL, Not absolutely necessary - just as site maps themselves are not absolutely necessary. As long as all your pages can be reached through normal links, Google will (eventually) find them... But a site map "helps" Google find pages and also gives Google hints regarding the importance and update-frequency of your pages, so allowing Google to index them more completely and more timely. K
Yes, I did all that. Google kept indexing my old, gone, pages, and not my new ones, even though it accepted and read my sitemap. It still has the old pages indexed, a few weeks after the changes, although it finally indexed the new pages. So I feel that the sitemap is a bit pointless.
hi that was very useful for me, special something that's about google sitemap, robots and etc, thanks
I re-submitted my website today as I moved my blog from blogspot to wordpress but I am not too sure if I did it right. It asked me for feed address and I gave my site name followed by.rss is it ok or it has to be.xml?
very good information is provided here. i wnt to know dear friends that how may i see the cashed list of 4000 pages of 1 site in google and msn as yahho gives the oppurtunity to have a tsv file. plz tell me
I'm sure you could pratik, but I don't see why you'd want to submit more than one for the same domain. And what do you mean by a list for DMOZ?
I dont think there is any advantage to put more than 1 sitemap on ur site. But re-submitting sitemap after update is important!
Hi guys. Thanks for useful information about Google sitemap. It's very interesting for me as I tried to make my own sitemap But for saving time now I'm using Sitemap Writer Pro for my websites. I think this is good soft for making XML Sitemap. This webtool generates the sitemap for my website in just seconds. Mayor search engines (Google, Yahoo, Ask, MSN, Moreover) are able to index and read my sitemaps without any problems. Is there any other softs that you can recommend me?
Can you please let me know exactly why Google report the html sitemap as Unsupported file format Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit. What exactly could be the problem as the sitemap one present sounds good Edit/Delete Message There is only Sitemap guidelines for xml...how about Html????
HTML sitemaps are for general crawling by search engines / humans... However, Google Webmaster Portals only accepts certain types of sitemap files, e.g. xml sitemaps protocol files. You can check my article that shows and explains thee differences between types of sitemap files.
Very helpful entry. I also found that sitemaps.org has additional information as well. If anyone else already posted this, my apologies. Threads this long are hard to go through.
This thread is best for the information on sitemaps and all the credits go to DP members. But I still have some questions to be answered: I am new in webmaster thingy and just launched my brand new site. I don't have the robots.txt file in my website's root directory(haven't placed it yet), activated the wordpress google sitemap plugin but haven't used it to create a sitemap to upload on google webmaster tool. Yet I am using the webmaster tool and google analytics(confirmed ownership of site by uploading a file). Even though I don't hv the robots.txt file and no sitemap uploaded to webmaster tool my site is still crawled by google, yahoo, msn and it appears in all the search engines. So I am confused now, if everything is going fine why do I need to place the robots.txt file and upload sitemap? What changes will it make? And most important : Why is everything working fine? Like I said I am new in all these so it is possible that I am making some mistakes in understanding how search engines work. That's why I am looking for help from you guys.
