    Blogging or a website network?

Should I become a pro blogger or try to operate a website network? Which is going to be more profitable in the long run? Are blogs easier to get ranked in blog search and such? Or should I make a content site network?

It is absolutely imperative to update very frequently (daily if you can manage it) with original content if you plan on breaking in to any niche of the blogging market. Static web sites do not require such frequent updates, so if you are under time constraints then it might be the way to go. You could also try a hybrid approach, with a combination of both (for example, using a pyramid of blogs to promote a static site?).

Ther is not much difference between them. A blog platform is just a content management script which lets you publish content easily. It can be used to power any kind of content website though, if you customise it enough.

I've used wordpress to power a few mini sites instead of other cms's because there are so many plugins and themes freely available for it.

I think blogs rank better and sometimes they get very popular when you put the right time and effort they become very profitable, so I suggest to go blogging. Good luck!

Given the current state of the economy, I would look into starting an online business that wasn't based on advertising ;)

Such as selling things people do not have the money to buy? Fair point that advertising budgets feel the pinch a little quicker than other areas, but the "state of the economy" increases difficulty of breaking into most areas. Having said that, sites such as a foreclosures directory etc. might thrive ;)

Yes, thanks for clarifying my point. There will be plenty of other areas that are negatively impacted, but I just wanted to make the OP think before blindly jumping into a business model based on online ad revenue.
