    Hey all..

I have a Car site.. which i have spoken of in other posts.. anyway i read alot about "blog farms".. And notice people get penalized for having these.

Now my main site is car news in general, and i wish to have 10+ sub domains.. tires, engines, panels, and a few other ones.. this is all going to be related what i want to know is will i be penalized for this or should i just buy a new domain for each of these sites and run them all under a network "So & So's Car network in a small header above the header ?

Thanks if you can answer this, i am trying to play by the rules and dont wish to undo any of my good work of late, thanks

Sub-domains are fine as long as they have real, unique content and the common guidelines for all sites are followed.

Now the smart thing to do would be to put those categories in subFOLDERS.

I generally agree with that. Although I have done subdomains before, it's better to add on to the main domain, and build on the strength of it, rather than separating into separate "sites". I regretted doing them years later when I learned better. :)

    Hey thanks guys !!

really wasn't sure, slowly getting my shit together, and dont want to run the risk of google banning me, so thought i would ask before going ahead with it.

I heard of WP farms.. i dont want anything like that, its all related to the one thing "CARS" .. so if thats ok then i guess i can get started cheers

    From SEO, car.com > www.car.com aaa.car.com > www.car.com/aaa/

I think if your domain name is very good, you should use the sub-domains...

or if it is normal or not good, you may register some more better domain names...

for sub directory, it is not suggested.

Google now treats sub domains and sub directories the same, as before in the past your subdomain.website.com would have been treated as a separate site. This is no longer the case unless you are a huge corporation with heavy authority. From a designer's standpoint, it is much easier to work with your site that uses sub folders then sub doamins. From an SEO standpoint they both are now equal and have been for almost a year.

Too bad he doesn't say anywhere that subdomains and subfolders get treated the same.

Sub-domains are fine, there is nothing wrong with them. Anyway, I personally prefer to have sub folders instead of sub domains.

Sure, they are fine if you don't care about rankings. But who does, right?

Sub Domains should be used when you want to add content to a site that is different to the main sites theme.. EG: google.com - news.google.com - maps.google.com etc

If you have a car site, and want to add categories related to cars to the site, then you should use folders. as these extra "related" categories add related content to your sites theme.

    So it should be MYSITE.com/Wheels/

If you want to add unrelated content about... um, say ipods to your car site then it should be ipods.MYSITE.com

    Hope that make sense

    Cheers

    "James"

Cheers mate, that cleared a few misconceptions up for me, i was only using cars as a reference but yes my content is related but not directly related after viewing some competitors sites in the same niche they are using subdomains so i'll follow in their footsteps and see how i go.

    Thanks again
