Hello everyone, I have a 2 part question and would appreciate some intelligent response. Also, I realize having my own domain is better, but this is a first endeavor type deal, a learning experience for when I move on to investing in a domain. (Or a few..) 1. How do blogspot owned domains fair in the SERPs overall, in a niche with around 1 million competing pages, and around 700k monthly visits. Do you think a blogspot could do well? Assuming the blog is updated daily with unique content. 2. Any tips for SEO when using blogspot blogs?
I have seen many blogspot blogs on the top 10 of the SERP but to have a better control over your site, it is always better to have your own domain rather than getting it from google...
It would seem that the main blogging platforms have about the same legging when it comes to search engines. However, like everyone else has said, definitely use your own domain.
What happens if you get successful? You'll want your own domain which will result in losing all your PR because you won't be able to redirect. Why assume failure? A domain with hosting isn't very expensive and you'll be ahead of the game. I recommend WordPress. If this will be a hobby and not a money making venture, you'll be fine with Blogspot. Content is king, if you have great content, you'll have success with Blogspot or any other domain (generally speaking). Good luck
Generally I've seen some blogspots rank even higher than some of those with their own domain. So basically it depends on how you carry out your seo and adding content. But I would suggest if you are aiming for long term plan, it would be better to get your own domain. Working redirect later part can be a mess and it's better to avoid all the hassles.
It doesn't matter what is the hosting: either it is a free one with blogspot or your own domain. Two blogs will rank the same if you do an experiment.
I am the owner of a blogspot blog and I am staying with it. As far as I know, blogspot ranks as high as any other domain. For google, any domain is just like that. It ranks domains according to the seo and importance. As for me, I believe in staying with blogspot for obvious advantages: no hosting fees, unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth. And no SERP problems. Also, who said Blogspot cannot be made professional? Check out my site in the signature. I am doing my brandbuilding with free platforms and even a free template you see. What's wrong in google blogspot? Even all google blogs and several other high traffic professional blogs are there in blogspot. So, it is definitely a great free choice.
Nobody. Anybody will agree that a hosted blog can LOOK professional, but what we are saying is that it is NOT professional. If somebody isn't wiling to invest the $10 to register a domain and the negligible cost of hosting then why should I take them seriously as a professional? I wouldn't take a plumber seriously if they arrived and asked me to lend them the tools to do their work. Or if I went to an attorney and their office was in the back of street market. If you are serious about your business, you will make that very small investment and separate it from the free stuff. So to the original OP, I would suggest WordPress on your own domain from the outset. As others have said, why set yourself up with limitations and obstacles in your way?
I always use the domain because this look professional but I use blogspot as dummy blog to link building..
