I have felt that my benefit from being in the DMOZ has gone down over the past 8 months or so...anyone else have similar experience?

Only one visitor? WOW that is discouraging. I didn't realize that. I thought having an entry in dmoz is a boon for any site when it comes to traffic. But well, may be it is just a fraction of the needed popularity. The problem is your site has to show up on GOOGLE (you know that is the monopoly). If the site doesn't show up on google it is toast. Pathetic, but true.

What do you mean? Can you be more specific? There was enough comments about the legality and copyright, I have changed the name from 'DMOZ alternative directory' to 'DmozAlt.Com directory'. I don't think that is any violation of copyright. This might not be dmoz directory, but it has close to a million categories and it is easy to list the site. Well again the obstacle as someone pointed out is the promotion. It takes time. Thanks for the feedback.

Sorry to hear that. I checked the site now and it seems to be loading quick and OK. Not sure what was going on when you tried. Can you please try again and see if it works?

No, buddy, you aren't bad mouthing when you tell the site isn't loading.

BTW from my traffic stats, I am noticing that people are in the site for 0 seconds, does that really mean 0 seconds? Do they close the site as soon as they open it? Even if so shouldn't it be at least 1 second!?

So how do you make a person at least browse your site for a few minites? WOW that is the challenge. Well....

Any more specifics on what is bad with the design? Please look at www.dmoz.org and it doesn't look like DmozAlt.Com's design is very different from that.

Do you suggest any spefic design? Can you please post any links to any good design templates or know of anyone who can help? Thanks much.

Design is not good as compared with any other directory. Try to emphasis on what can appeal to any end user.

OK. Not sure how to creative with a directory. That is a tough call. I will think about it. The end user can list free in the directory. I have posted a list of FAQ on the site. It has all needed information. The directory has close to a million categories, which can be easily choosen from the list site page. Not sure if they aren't useful to an end user.

I intend to improve certain aspects of the site.

Hi Hi please anyone please do take a look at my website dmozalt.com and provide more feedback. Also please feel free to list your site on the site. Thanks.

Also please take a look at my news site newszz.com and give suggestions to improve. Thanks.

P.S. I have a question about a site's net worth being published by the site websiteoutlook.com . Have any of you used that? From what I see or have seen for www.dmozalt.com the estimated net worth doesn't seem to be realistic at all.

Hi, looks good to me, though the site design kinda looks plain. Will post later as I go through the site more.

    Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I know the site isn't rich in terms of its design, but I hope the functionality is built in well. Did you have a chance to go through the rest of the site?

Anyone, please do you have more feedback on the site? Also please spread the word and also list your site on the DmozAlt.com directory. Thx.

Don't worry, DMOZ is not a trademarked name. I was quite surprised to find that out. I thought they would have protected it.

I'm just thinking about the purpose of this directory. DMOZ is a human edited directroy - that's why it is unique and provides (or provided) a value. Your's is just another web directory, it is not human edited, it is stocknsurf's edited, there's no network of editors involved. I don't mean to insult you. I just don't see how this can provide an alternative to DMOZ.

Theme is not good. Blue and yellow don't work together. The red contour around the magnifier is just awful.

Good and thoughtful points. YEah, I am surprised that DMOZ isn't a trademarked name. But can you please provide specific information/links that tell that?

True about your comments about not having a network of human editors involved. But then how do you do that? OR why haven't anyone else done that other than DMOZ? I don't understand. May be I will try to incorporate that feature. But it definitely will take a big effort.

I agree about the theme also. I have no idea which colors go together. Awful I agree unless I change it.

    http://tess2.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=7sr7mi.1.1

Use this when you have doubts about trademarks. It searches both active and inactive trademarks in USA. However, if you feel you're gonna roll out on a bigger scale, consult a lawyer.

I don't know a lot about directory scripts. Maybe other guys can come up with suggestions. I am pretty confident I've seen directories that allow user registration and permissions. Just cannot remember what script that was. Probably not a free one.

It shouldn't take a big effort. The idea of any network is that you get the job done for you by other people.

Colour-wise. Try an earthy palette: brownish, sand, maroon on a white background. Flashy coloured directories are annoying and sometimes may look unprofessional.

something about it looks too sanitized - like it's been bleached. Need some subtle stuff in there. I personally hate dotted lines too - but layout is ok

Thanks for those useful and thoughtful comments. Appreciate that. I will do more research on the copyright stuff. Will look into your design suggestions too. I know it ain't easy getting this thing hitting with traffic. Hope I can sustain ....
