Selecting keywords for a new site

Could anybody show me a method of selecting keywords for a new site?

A link to a tutorial would be great :)

My site has to do with movies but the searches "movie reviews" and "movie news" return millions of results. Would it be wiser to go for different keywords or just see what progress I can make with these keywords?

Also, is it worth investing in wordtracker? or will the google adwords tool be sufficient? Are there any other tools I should be using?

The google keyword tool should be sufficient.

"movie reviews" or "movie news" may be too competitive to go after with a new site. You should find a few longer 3 - 4 word phrases to go after instead. Try plugging those keywords into the google keyword tool and see if there are any longer forms of that keyword. If you start with a longer keyword that contains the more competitive keyword, it will help your long term goal of ranking for the competitive term too. To start you should target less competitive keywords though.

yup. i think movie reviews would be a good keyword. And you should start populating the website with relevant content. Good luck! :)

@Jmz - When you select a keyword, search for that keyword in google in "quotes". If you see over 100,000 results then its best if you don't target that keyword (Applicable for new websites).

There are plenty of Keyword Research Tool available:

    1. Google Keyword Tool External (Shows Amount of Searches + competition + keyword variation)
    2. Word tracker
    3. Seo Book Keyword Suggestion Tool

Just search for any of the above in Google and you'll find it.

    Thanks for the tips :)

    Anything else I should use/consider?

SaadSEO: When you say search for a keyword in quotes, do you mean a single keyword or would a phrase of two or three words be ok? I've found a couple of searches that have low xxxx results that according to the google keyword tool get around 3000 searches a month.

You can search a word or phrase within quotes. A phrase with 3 or more words is commonly referred to as "long tail keywords". When you use the quotes, the number you are getting back is the number of websites (pages) that have that term on that page.

Right so I've done some keyword research and picked a 3 word phrase which when I search for it in quotes has 11,900 results but, when I search for it not in quotes it has 10,400,000 results. The phrase gets around 1600 searches per month.

Does the 11,900 results mean I have a chance of breaking into the first few pages for that phrase or do I have no chance because 10,400,000 is waaaayy to many?

Searching using quotes shows you the number of pages that has the exact phrase. If you used "how to win" , then all pages returned will have how to win on it.

Without quotes returns any combination of the phrase. Could be just one word, two, or all three.

I don't use Google's keyowrd tool anymore for searches since all of their results are so over inflated. At least 3 times what other search engines return.

I'm nost sure I understand what you are talking about, or at this point, me either:))

Searching with quotes in the normal Google Search window is what I am talking about. For example, I just entered how to win in Google search. Here is what I got:
Results 1 - 10 of about 201,000,000 for how to win. (0.16 seconds)
    Now with quotes:
Results 1 - 10 of about 38,800,000 for "how to win". (0.19 seconds)

Quite a bit of difference. If you are going to be doing article marketing or some other form of free things to get traffic, you need to use the "". Your main objective is to get a low enough number where you could easily rank on the first page of Google Search results. So, that 38,800,000 is obviously way out of reach. You would want to find another phrase that returned maybe 15,000 or less. That 15,000 is pretty much a standard figure and is not hard to beat. It all depends on the keyword phrase, your landing page etc.

If you have a good phrase, and you say that number is low, then you found a good starting point, but you still need to do further research. There are many other factors involved. Oh, and be sure to check another keyword resource to make sure that the number found is "really" low. Many times you will see a huge difference, depending on what tool you use.

I see that your targeting a specific word in the " " so now buy searching "kauai massage" I get the correct amount of searches for that phrase. But Im looking at key word tracker tools" :now to identify how many searches for that phrase knowing exactly how many searches there are per phrase what does prove exactly?/

I am very sorry, but I do not understand what you are asking. So let me do this:

Putting in "kauai massage" into Google gives me this:
    Results 1 - 10 of about 3,710 for "kauai massage". (0.16 seconds)

If your number of people searching this phrase is a lot, you have a gold mine.
Entering this into a keyword research tool tells me this:
    11 14 4 2 19

The 19 is total number of people searching that term in one day. The 14 is Yahoo, etc etc,. You should forget this and look for a different phrase.

By the way, any massage that accepts PayPal really needs to be looked at very closely:rolleyes: That's almost as bad as giving Green Stamps:D

With all due respect, I am not going to respond to this thread anymore. So, best of luck to you for whatever it is you are asking or want to do..I really want to help but can't understand exactly what it is you are asking.

this post is extremely valuable and so targeted for the performance of optimization ...with great respects and more. so you made the conclusion that (You should forget this and look for a different phrase) I agree totally 100% althogh when I checked out the most search word for searchers for this phrase my site is doing Battle for this phrase. because I jump from page two to page one daily.

This makes me understand that Google's searches are demanding. My most feared competitor is number one in almost ever category so im targeted that phrase "Kauai Massage" ...I appreciate the help greatly but why smash down on Pay Pal??? please answer these
