Yom Kippur Riots: Arab and Jewish Rioting in Acre, Israel

There have been three days of riots in Acre, Israel after an Arab man drove though a Jewish neighborhood in disrespect of the Yom Kippur religous holiday.

A Hamas official, Mushir al-Masri, said that "a day will come when we will purge Acre of the Zionists," Israel Radio reported.

Nehamiya Shirim Michaeli, a candidate running on an independent list in Acre's upcoming mayoral election, said the Arab rioting had been preplanned by "Islamist forces" in the city.

"On this day, when the Jewish people soul-search among themselves and with God, 500 Arab youths entered this area with axes. This was a pogrom, a terrorist attack. We respected Ramadan for a month - all we ask is for Yom Kippur to be respected for one day. Coexistence is just a word here. If the Arab public wants respect, it must also give respect," he said.

Very true. Looking at the current situation, 'peaceful coexistence' sounds highly unlikely. But I wish I would be proved wrong in the future. :(

both Jews and Arabs were throwing rocks not only at one another but also at the officers trying to restore order.

Police arrested three Jewish rioters. Overall, 12 people were in custody for rioting and eight were under house arrest.

An Arab family's house was set ablaze on Saturday night. No casualties were reported but the house sustained serious damage.

Two Arab-owned apartments in the Jewish, eastern section of Acre were torched on Friday night.

sad indeed for the innocent people on BOTH sides.

The result of an innocent man just driving to his property = bunch of illiterate, uncivilized animals roaming the streets trying to kill each other (both Jews and Arabs alike).

An earlier report said the driver "blasted music from his car and refused to leave when asked."

Hundreds of Arab youths rioted in Acre's Jewish neighborhood causing extensive damage to cars and shops in the area. Israeli police forcefully dispersed the crowds using tear gas and stun grenades, Rosenfeld said.

Acre's Jews can't throw stones. I guess Acre's Arabs have more experience. :D

On the serious note, both sides are at fault. Doesn't matter if its Ramadan, Yom Kobur or not. Civilian fighting will not solve any of problems. That is why Politics exist.

    Peace,

I will tell you what happened, from an eye witnessing that I read(In Hebrew):
In the middle of Yom Kippur, the holiest holiday for the Jews, Arab driver got in to the Jews area in high speed and high volume Arab music. He almost ran over little girl, because Yom Kippur everybody walk on the thoroughfare, becasue nobody driving in Youm Kippur. They throw stones on the vehicle, and few hours later, tens of Arabs came to the Jewish neighborhood and destroyed everything - Stores, cars, trees... In the middle of Yom Kippur. That is how it all began.
    For me, it's reminding Kristallnacht.

Mosque loudspeakers used to rally Muslim rioters in Acre

A rumor spread among Acre's Arab residents that the driver had been killed and that prompted calls from some local mosques to avenge his reported death, according to Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld.

Hundreds of Arab youths rioted in Acre's Jewish neighborhood causing extensive damage to cars and shops in the area. Israeli police forcefully dispersed the crowds using tear gas and stun grenades, Rosenfeld said.

Acre is one of a handful of inter-ethnic towns in Israel, consisting of 70 percent Jewish Israelis and about 30 percent Arab Israelis.

Did the isreali police arrest those who ate or drank during the holy month of ramadan? or did wikipedia remove the pictures of the prophet mohammed even though they knew it is a religious sensitivity? or is it just that the rest of the world is allowed to violate our religious beliefs?

If you want to post an article then post and quote articles showing the whole nature of the article.

The rest of the CNN article you quoted (apparently you felt the rest was not as important)
and post articles from an unbiased source or grab articles from both sides and don't just quote jpost.com as if they are not biased.

    you missed the point.
in Yom Kippur the roads are full of people who walking on the road and not on the sidewalk. in addition, a lot of kids drive their bikes on the road.
get into Jewish neighborhood in high speed in Yom Kippur, this is very dangerous and he should be in prison if you ask me.

You hit the nail on the head. The rest of the world (non-muslim) doesn't really care about ramadan, mohammed or any of your other religious beliefs.

    It works both ways.
