Commenting on other blogs: Homepage URL or post URL?

Discussion in 'Link Development' started by GuardianAngel, Oct 10, 2008.

I am trying to find previous threads here that are similar but found none. Anyway, we all know that leaving comments on other blogs may help us in link building. But what do you think is the right approach?

Always use the Homepage URL , or the blog post URL that is related to the post where you will leave the comment?

If the latter is better, can I still use a two-month older post as long as it is related to the post?

By the way, I am using the latter but I use my homepage URL if I cannot find any relation to my posts. I just love commenting on blogs as it also helps me to increase my virtual friends.

Hope to get useful comments from anyone. Thanks!

If you are looking for SEO juice, always strike upon individual blog posts. They will have PR till the next update atleast and if it contains anything less than 30 links, you can be assured of good SEO benefits.

that totally depends on your link building objective. if you want your homepage to rank up, then use homepage url but if you find related post for individual entry, then use that also once in a while

Deep link whenever you get a chance. And try to be one of first commenters.

I suppose a two month article may put your comment way down on the list, if the blog is high profile enough to get a lot of comments. Hopefully those comments are not full of mindless babble either.

@mechanix: Why people bring up PR every time their is a discussion about linking, is beyond me. Give it a rest.

Does rank up here means PR? Higher PR?

I think Dodger is telling me that linking is not about PR...

I am a bit confused here...

If the post you are leaving a comment on is relevant to another post you did, then link to that post for the deep link. If not, then just use your homepage which will not hurt you anyhow. As for PR...I wish everyone would just give it a rest, PR means nothing anymore besides a number and a green bar. Linking is not about PR, linking is all about getting backlinks pointing to your site using keywords that are relevant to what you are linking to. If you are all about your PR, then you will just need to get backlinks on high PR sites that point back to your site. PR has nothing to do though with where you rank in the SERP's.

well it's really up to you.. you can do it on home page or individual post., but
most SEO gurus will suggest you to build some "deep links"
(links to inner post rather than home page) if you want inner pages to be found in search engines
as well and make sure you have unique TITLE and META tags for each posts or pages you've got.

    that's important....

Make sense to me now. It is the SERP that helps our posts land on top Google when someone searches using the related keyword. While PR is a popularity icon only, how does it help a blog and why it is more being mentioned (dream of) instead of SERP?

If SERP results to traffic (unique visitors), then high PR results to...? Attraction to advertisers? or nothing at all?

    Thanks, guys!

semspot is exactly right. Each link is in effect a vote for your site. Even no follow links still have a vote of sorts for your site as the Google bot still goes and looks into the other site - check your daily logs and you will see this to be true. Also, regardless of a no follow, readers will still link through. Just be careful not to spam as Google will lower your trust value (which is the biggest factor on where you rank) if you spam or engage in questionable practices - not to mention that you could end up with a penalty or more (ban).

If you want to target and focus link building on specific page in order increase link popularity, then of course using post url is a better option. But that is subject to the blog owners discretion whether to approve and accept your comment in the first place.

Find a good subject and be in the top 10 to make a post, hopefully it grows huge and people read you'r post first.

In an ideal world, that may be true. But I think 95% of the people making comments on noteworthy blogs are there for the link. Chances are they never read the blog post at all, let alone any comments that was made to it.

Unfortunately, Dodger is right. There is just so much crappy spam out there that it essentially ruins it for everyone else. I just deleted 14 exact duplicate copy comments that were submitted on my blog Bestbraindrain.com. I guess the spammer couldn't read that I moderate all comments for spam before they are posted. The english was very poor also - go figure.

I just do the homepage as it's easier to type but I found by having good strength of the homepage all of my new posts and old posts have good strength as well

It's really just your choice and opinion

Why not make a press release and use a service like PRWeb to distribute it. You could potentially get more traffic that way (if you do it right) then with 1,000,000 comments on blogs.

I have done extensive link campaigns both for my own sites as well as clients sites and based on the results I think it's safe to say the best recipe is to comment on the post page, make your comment noteworthy and relevant to the actual post, if there are other good comments prior to yours it doesn't hurt to comment on them within your comment, and whenever possible link to your deep post, if you don't have a post to link to, create a post about the topic you are linking to and link back to it.

Be honest and give value. Pretty much the same as you would if you were posting here...

No-follow links may not pass link juice, but that should not be the main objective of linking alone. If you are posting to a reputable blog with good info and your comment is valuable, people will follow your link to learn more about you, it's human nature. If that leads them back to another good post on your blog also relevant to the original topic, they will leave a comment there as well, which is content for your site.

That's how the web goes round :) or should at least...

@granola - you know, as a guy with a goofy name, you aren't half bad. Although I think this statement:

misses the mark a little bit. Or maybe you have not been around all that long.

My observation of posts around here are anything but honest and add hardly any value to the OP. So basically you are telling people to continue what they are doing. Just an observation.

OK scratch: Pretty much the same as you would if you were posting here...

and lets just go with: Be honest and give value.

Not sure if I read it right, but you are typing the URL letter by letter instead of copy-paste?!

Actually, I am leaving comments on blogs on three purposes. One, to share my point of view and to add quality contents. Two, to find other blogs to socialize with and three, to promote my posts. These three points I mentioned are in order.

And yes, that's how web MUST go around.

By the way, thanks to all who shared their thoughts.
