Someone accessed my paypal account today..

Well, today, someone accessed my PayPal account and paid $250 with both my fund and credit card to a domain/hosting company. I'm really pissed off, but have talked to paypal now and opened a claim regarding unauthorized use of account, and will hopefully get a refund of my money. I've of course also changed password and more. They limited my account for a while also because the person tried to change my address and credit card info.

Anyone else experienced the same? Did you get your money back?

I just can't get how someone could know my password. The lady I talked to at PayPal said that my account was accessed using my password, which no one else, other than me, knew about.

Report it to your Credit Card issuser or bank, you will get your funds that was charged on the cards. The paypal funds you might not get back unless paypal refunds you which sometimes doesn't happen.

how do you think they got your password?

are using pirated OS? may be cracked Windows or somthin?
Or using some pirated software and used a keygen to activate it?
if yes then yr keystrokes are logged, format your PC and avoid using keygens and cracked stuff.

I'm not using any cracked software or keygen, or anything like that, so to be honest, I'm not sure how someone got my password. I'm very careful online.

Thanks for the advices regarding maybe contacting the hosting company and my credit card company.

Yes, it happened to me. I called Paypal who couldn't care less. I lost the money and never got refunded by Paypal. I had to cancel my paypal account, my CC and my bank account...

It could be possible that a keylogger was implanted on your machine and you would not even know!

How else would the hacker have got a hold of your password? Unless it was just so obvious or an easy password to guess? Was your password possibly something that would be an easy guess for a hack.

Well I hope you get your money back, I would certainly be pissed off and I would also wish to try and track the hacker to their location if possible.

How does a keylogger get implanted without my knowledge? Via softwares or something?

My password was pretty difficult to guess, it contained both letters, numbers and caps, so it shouldn't be a password someone could just find out about and guess about.

Well I am not exactly sure, but I have heard of, or read about such things.

It could maybe be like disguised in software, where you think you are installing something good and it has the logger hidden inside that application. Or something like if you had clicked on a funky link in an email?

Have you installed any software lately that you thought was cool or went some where on a page where it said install this cool software, and you did?

Have you ran any weird .exe or .dll files thinking you were installing something good lately?

Or like have you gotten any emails lately that say login to your paypal account here and give a link and those are actually phishing emails and can look just like a paypal email with their logo and all in them, but when you click and login they now have your password.

I find it weird how this could have happened, and I am curious now too and want to know how it happened, so can be more aware myself.

hi Really sorry to hear about this.
If i were you I would be quite concerned. Maybe you downloaded something from a fishy site and got yourself a keylogger. I think it would be really good if you ran a complete spyware scan on your PC maybe even reformat windows to get peace of mind. Next time install good firewall if you dont have it already.

Or maybe your paypal pass is same as you use on some other site. so admin of that site gave a try to access your paypal through it.

Well in paypal cant you get the ip address of logins ?. I use alertpay often and it shows the IP through which the account has been accessed and previous login IP's.

Hope you get your $250 back.
wish I could help you any more on this.
    Good luck.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/xscan.php

Go there and see what gets picked up. It's a great online tool to dectect keyloggers installed on your computer. They can get installed by toolbars, addons, even downloaded files.

you should change your password frequently.
especially if it's a paypal account that has a valid funding source.

Get a good internet security software installed. So much adware, spyware, trojans and so on doing the rounds.

Oh, No, If you think that your pass is hack, first of all, open an unauthorized dispute, then format your whole computer, install a good antivirus.

And Dont download any zip file from any unknown persons. scan all the files before extracting, because when you extract the hacking file will go into c:\windows and will monitor your keyboard activity. so whenever you type anything, it will send information to hacker, so he will easily access your all accounts,

    change passwords regularly.

Also install some protection like a firewall and antivirus. So you can know if something is sending data out of your PC to someone else or not.
