What are points to consider before registering new domain name?

    One thing i can tell you is to think about what words will be used to search for your product or service. Are you selling soap, insurance, real estate? Be sure to have your product in the domain name, it will pay off in the future.

    Chose domain name according to your project name and that must be the one you like + it must be memorable.

    if you want your customers to like your domain name
    make it short, and easy to remember and of course related to your product/site theme

    some say that search engines would prefer keyword rich domains (ie keyword1-keyword2.com)
    but I have seen that its not needed to rank high

    Just focus on what would be easier for you customers/visitors

    I've read that you should avoid hyphens in names and also that .com is better that .net etc.

    actually .com or .net etc... doest matter, .com would only make a difference in direct type ins.

    Better for what? If you are talking about the SEO, so that is not truth. Domain name can't influence on the domain name

    Keywords, memorable, possibility for mispelling, extension, does it make sense, length, flexibility, ease of transfer if not planning to hold onto it.

    No it wont make a difference over .net .org, etc.. you should worry more about the on page SEO

    Select your domain name based on the keywords searched most often which helps you in getting good traffic.Also make it concise and catchy and finally easy to remember.
