    I strongly disagree..
Landlords were getting more that the current market value of those lands. And who said that the whole land that govt acquired was fertile? Govt acquired a total of 1100 acres and 400 acres of that was productive.
Ms Mamata Banarjee was asking to return those 400 acres from the core area. Now, you have to loose something to gain something, right?

I don't have much idea about how the land acquisition went in bengal, but in Noida(UP), farmers are playing in crores of rupees, including many of my relatives. Flying around in swanky cars :)

    what is "market value"?

Market value cannot be arbitrarily determined by a third party.

True market value is the price at which both the seller and buyer agree to make the deal.

Why should anyone be forced to sell his land at a price that he doesn't feel is right.

This issue is not just about a single asset. Land is everything for a farmer...his entire life depends on it.

The farmer should be the only person to decide what price he wants to sell his land for.

    That's true.

Not just in Noida, but even in places like Mundra, farmers have got a good deal and are happy to sell their land.

Mundra SEZ is more 10 times in area compared to the plot that Tatas wanted in Singur, but there was no drama in Mundra because farmers got what they asked for.

That is how it should be done.

    ========================================

If India has to eliminate poverty in rural India, it has to allow benefits of development to flow to the poor farmers.

Forceful evictions and land-grabbing is not going to do any good to the social fabric of India.

It will only lead to more social unrest and naxalism.

If land prices in cities have jumped 5-10 times just because development has happened here, rural Indian deserves a better price for its land too.

Land is a scarce resource in India and a free market is the only way to determine "market value" of rural India's most valuable asset.

    Sad but true!

being a bengali, not from west bengal though, is a shocking news for me too. I have also heard that in singur itself there were people who were supporting the tata project. This whole politics, did not helped anyone's cause, not even mamata banerjee

If things were so easy, then india could have develped ages back, besides she is not in power, she is in the opposition, and after all this, her political career will take a blow, i hope!

    There already is a problem...

Majority of the land that the Gujarat government has given to the Tata's is "disputed" and there is a pending litigation in the Gujarat High Court.

    Source.

Until the court makes a final decision in this matter, no progress can happen.

Did you gone through the link I posted?
Anyway, They were not only getting the right price for their land, one of the family members also got job in that project. What else one can ask? Even, at the final proposal, those who were not willing to give land were offered the same area of land just outside of the project area. The land price was increased by 20 times there due to that.
