I am not touching my retirement money either. I am not going to retire for decades so I will ride it out with that money. The money I pulled is what my wife and I have been saving for a down payment on a house - so to watch that drop has been killing me. I was being patient but I got to the point where I just need to protect what we have. I still make all my contributions to my IRA because of the tax purposes you mention.

Yeah man then I can't blame you and extremely sorry to hear!

I just checked and wow my sons investment account has lost about 40% this year!

I have lost over $10,000.00 in the last few days in the one account set alone.

Couldn't you invest in mutual bond funds or treasury inflation protected securities?

I will put the money into something. I have not had time to research where yet so I just needed to pull it out of the two funds I was in. I just started a shift to a new job and have just been too busy to do any real research. I will put in back into something safe which will hopefully at least keep pace with inflation if not better.

Invest $1000 and if you're lucky, you'll end up with $500,000. Lucky meaning they return to their original value. :D

But does it have 500x more chance to go to zero than back to its original value? If it's less than 500x the chance, it's a good gamble.

The 1930's taught that some stocks will NEVER regain their original value. I personally think once unemployment rises the depression cycle will be set in and take up to 5 years to climb out of.

PG - Proctor Gamble, JNJ - Johnson and Johnson

He is going after the supposed "defensive" names which despite their defensive nature will continue to get killed. All will be liquidated when the cash is needed because of incessant margin calls. You are better off with treasury bonds. If you don't know what the hell to do then get out of equities.

Thursday was the 3rd worst single day point loss in the DOW in history. the 29th of last month was the worst. Eight of the top twenty biggest single day point losses have happened this year.

Today was also the 11th largest single day percentage loss in history.

Nearly every week for a couple months I had been regretting not selling. Today, I was definitely at peace knowing my money was not dropping with the rest of the market.

I think with a collapse this size there will have to be a major contraction, with numerous job losses - at least greenhouse gases emissions will go down - less energy will be needed, so there is an up side.

Are any of you worried about your jobs? I'm in one of the safest government jobs, so if the government goes down we will be in anarchy anyhow.
