    Hi guys

I got a bit of a shock tonight. I do all the normal stuff for backlink building i.e. directories, articles, blog comments etc. and check the number of active backlinks once a week to see how I am progressing.

I use a number of online sites because I have found that the number varies depending on whos site I use. Last week I was up to 1200 approx. When I checked this evening some sites say I only have 740 a couple of sites even said I had none.

Now i know that there has to be more than zero cos i check on a couple of directories and they are still there so what is going on?:(

Dont worry! My site has shown on one site I check on backlinks that I have 0 backlinks from Yahoo and has said this for over a week. Two weeks ago I had 10K at yahoo. I checked site explorer and sure enough I had 9800 plus. The numbers from all of those other than google change almost every time I check. Google reports few but seems to be consistently few, I'll give them that. Get used to the variations. I have heard here on dp that the numbers may fluctuate more when you are adding links and the numberss are more volatile.

I have noticed this also. Sometimes it seems like the engines are going crazy when compared to Google which does not change much. On one hand, it's good to see the additional links, but then on the other hand, it can be quite the shock when something changes in a negative way, no matter how temporary it may be. :)

    Thanks for the info guys.

I checked again this morning and most of them appear to be back. :)

As you say Google does not seem to show that many by comparison to say Yahoo etc.

Its a bit of a pain because Google is by far the most popular search engine in the UK and my site is aimed predominantly at the UK.

That happens to everyone. If you want to always see the sheer number of your backlinks, use the Yahoo Site Explorer. Go to Yahoo Search and then put linkdomain:yourdomain.com into it. This will show you (consistently) what your backlink count is.

That's right, One site has reduced my Yahoo! links to 200 odd from a 1000 odd links. I don't think the other 800 links are removed. :D

Link Exchange should be checked regularly.

You should take a proper consideration of the links added to site.

If not followed properly then you should remind the link exchange partner.
