The military has assisted local first responders in dealing with natural emergencies such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and the like many times in the past. This is nothing new.

The army training is different from police training, each has its own role and specialty. Soldiers taking the role of policeman will be weird in normal circumstances though I feel that in emergency they can be a ready force to help out the police. Other than that it is better that they remain in their barracks.

The article is dated 2002. What happened to this brigade during Hurricane Katrina in 2005?

That's good news. The unit can serve as a rapid reaction force to back police up or provide security.

During hurricane katrina most of New Orleans Police deserted and it was every man for himself.

The military aren't going to replace the police. The brigade has only 4700 troops. The New York Police Dept has approx 49,000 men an that's not including Federal Police like ATF, FBI, Postal Police, Tresuary, Secret Service, as well as Coast Guard, Port Authority, Transit Police etc.

It's official: the U.S. Government views its citizens as the enemy.

I would say that. A well trained army protects its citizens and defend against the enemies. IMHO it will be too harsh to say that just because they are slated to act as police officers in some situation meant that the US Govt views its citizens as enemies. On the contrary, I feel that it shows that the Govt cares about its citizens, trying to find more resources to protect its citizens.

The US military cares more about the US than the politicians.

Some of the best US Presidents were Generals in the military.

My thoughts on this thread are simple, the military acting as police is a violation of the Posse Commitatus Act, which most Americans don't know exist, if you think the military is acting bad now, wait until the economy collapses, just one more reason to get out of here.

Rebecca, here is a link to the Posse Commitatus Act:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posse_Comitatus_Act

Is the Rebecca that started this thread the same one that posted in the thread I started on relocating to another country? If it is, you now see why I want to, the government blatantly violates its own laws, you can clearly see that this country is rotting from the inside out. I strongly advise you guys to get out while the airports are still open for business.

Translation: when the economy crashes, government will respond to civil unrest with military force.

The stage has been set, I'm leaving, screw what everyone here in this forum is saying about "bravery" and "staying here," this country is finished. When the military starts acting like cops, your country is done. You guys can stay and get shot up by M16s if you want, six months and I'm definitely gone, this country has absolutely no hope, it will fall 10 times harder than Rome.

Please go read the Posse Commitatus Act. I know you've probably never heard of it, but please go read it.

Just look back at Katrina. When they round up your neighborhood and kick in doors and take your guns it really doesn't matter what uniform they are wearing, army green or police blue.

Posse Commitatus Act is only an act that was passed after reconstruction. It's not part of the constitution.

Should the US fall into a depression there's no way that Police forces could handle the looting and rioting. The country has changed a lot since the 1930s and even the 1970s. People don't know how to make ends meet. Back in the 1930s people made their own clothes, grew their own vegatables and made soup. Today most people would be out in the street and hungry if they missed a few paychecks.
